Throughout my early years of college I did a lot of work with the American Cancer Society and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As a leukemia survivor myself, I wanted to get involved for personal reasons, but a lot of the work I did translates to the professional world. With the American Cancer Society, I was involved with the University of Minnesota, Duluth's student chapter. We worked with an American Cancer Society staff member to host an annual Relay for Life event, and over the course of the three years I was involved we managed to raise over $50,000 for the American Cancer Society. I was in a leadership position my final two years and played a leading role in scheduling and booking the event, planning a fundraising strategy, searching for corporate sponsors, and student engagement. With the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, I was a community contact for their Pennies for Patients program in the Duluth area. Pennies for Patients is a school based fundraiser that asks students to collect spare change to donate. As the community contact I provided information to schools reps interested in participating and spoke at kick-off events for those that did. In all, my volunteer experience has helped me develop communication and time management skills I otherwise would not have.
