A human-centered, purpose-driven classroom is created with a shared sense of responsibility to each other as a learning community and respect for each other as individual learners. It honors each student’s own learning goals and growth. It values process over product. And it is rooted in relevance and connectivity to the primarily adult world - the “real world” - outside of school.Taught high school World History, US History, AP European History, and Economics from 2012-2022. For the 2020-21 school year I also taught in fully-remote, hybrid, and in-person modalities. In addition to putting collaborative classrooms at the center of student learning, I take pride in being a thoughtful, reflective classroom teacher leader, and I am always reading and learning in order to strengthen and grow my professional practice. The main focus of my professional development for the past few years has been learning and implementing:• Universal Design for Learning: Constructed learning environments founded in UDL, providing multiple means of student engagement, representation, action, and expression.• Project-Based Learning: Co-created semester-long PBL experiences with senior students emphasizing community connection and self-directed learning.• Digital Pedagogy: Incorporated community-driven, collaborative tools to ensure digital spaces are welcoming, empowering, and authentic for learners.• Gradeless Learning: Pioneered standards-aligned, feedback driven gradeless learning using Evidence Journals and student led conferencing.
