About Nick A.

I'm a IT professional with more than 35 years experience working in IT in a wide range of Industries and environments. The last 20 years I have been immersed in the TV audience measurement industry providing data and business analysis, application development and consultancy to teams processing UK and international audience data.My history has exposed me to a large number of platforms, technologies and techniques which often gives me context when looking at something new and gives me the ability to ask the right questions. Wherever I have been, one of my key aims is to understand how the business and it's clients and suppliers work which often allows me to 'short circuit' the normal analysis path and provide effective solutions very quickly.

  • Financal Times Healthcare/Cartermil International
    Senior Analyst Programmer, Project Manager
    Financal Times Healthcare/Cartermil International May 1992 - Dec 1998
    Scotland, United Kingdom
I joined Cartermill to take over the management of their VAX based electronic publishing systems. The previous operations/development team had departed leaving no documentation or source code and I had to pick up the pieces. After two years I had reduced the work load of managing the systems from 120% of my time to 10% of my time, which included the migration from a VAX to a MicroVAX platform. I then went on to provide technical, development and data analysis support to the companies consulting arm for projects in the UK and EU. Beyond that I created new systems to collect the data, edit and publish :-- The Medical Directory (Details of all Doctors in the UK, Book and CD)- The Institute of Health Service Management Yearbook (Details of all health institutions in the UK)- CRIB (An on-line directory of research grants being funded in UK Universities) I was also tasked with producing several Financial Times Yearbook publications at very short notice. To do this I created the 'Quick and Dirty' publishing system which allowed the work to be broken up and sent to many external editors. The system included workflow control to allow the process to be controlled and monitored and put all the work packages together.
