About Nick Graham
Ten years spent providing, developing and managing military flying training has given me the experience and the ability to understand how to bring out the best in high-performing individuals and organisations. My experience ranges from teaching ab-inito trainees through to mentoring and standardising experienced instructors. In my previous role, I re-designed the internationally renowned RAF Aircrew Instructors’ Course to bring in the latest expertise in adult learning, human factors and performance management techniques. That course, and my instructional methodology, emphasises the importance of non-technical skills (airmanship), their centrality to elite performance and how they can be best understood, taught and assessed. After all, you can teach a monkey to fly but can you teach it to operate effectively in dynamic, pressurised environments?! The de-brief (following a brief and the actual experience or operation) is where the most effective learning takes place. Here, performance is honestly assessed and realistic goals are agreed for how we can improve next time around. The RAF has long understood the importance of the debrief and I have taken 100 years of best practice into account in the debrief package that I deliver. As well as being able to provide this training myself, I also bring knowledge and first-hand experience of how to design and incorporate into organisations, packages of professional development that provide a pathway to excellence for trainers, operators and employees. In a military career of 20 years I have logged over 3000 hours flying both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft in a wide variety of scenarios, from supporting Special Forces on the battlefield to providing humanitarian relief. As a staff officer, I gained significant experience of facilitating and managing change; leading, coaching and empowering teams and of the processes around contracting, purchase and finance.
