  • Enovus Labs
    Co-Founder
Enovus Labs Oct 2020 - Present
    Dublin City, County Dublin, Ireland
I co-founded Enovus Labs with Brian Donnelly to provide innovative thermal and mechanical consultancy focused on creating lightweight and compact cooling solutions. We have designed solutions for some of the solar system's most extreme environments, built to withstand shock, vibration, and temperature extremes. With over 35 years of combined engineering experience, we specialize in innovating and solving challenging hardware deployments, from scorching hot deserts to freezing lunar landscapes. Let us engineer a solution for you.
  • Mettle-Edge
    Co-Founder
    Mettle-Edge Apr 2023 - Present
    Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
I co-founded Mettle-Edge with Brian Donnelly, the product side of Enovus Labs consultancy. Leveraging years of advanced technology development and innovation, we created our inaugural product, Segri-COOL. Segri-COOL represents a groundbreaking cooling solution addressing the critical challenges of size, weight, and carbon footprint.
  • Nokia Bell Labs
    Senior Member Of Technical Staff
Nokia Bell Labs Feb 2015 - Sep 2020
    County Dublin, Ireland
Nokia Bell Labs is a world leader in the research and development of telecommunication technologies. As a Senior Member of Technical Staff I’ve led multidisciplinary teams in multiple projects in excess of €1M; managed multiple external engagements with partners and universities; and received multiple awards for excellence as recognition for my work. Thermal lead for the Mission to the Moon (MTTM) project. This project required the ruggedisation of commercially available LTE equipment for a deployment on the moon and involved leading and motivating a multidisciplinary team located across the world to keep to extremely and challenging deadlines. Technically this work involved extensive thermal modelling and experimental validation which required the construction of a custom thermal vacuum chamber.Project lead of the Chameleon network project. Unifying and motivating multiple teams across Bell Labs to collaborate on a common project and deliver something truly impactful. This work culminated in me being recognized with a Bell Labs Award for “Exemplary thought leadership” and an Irish Lab Awards “Young Leader of the Year” nomination. I also designed and developed a unique two-phase thermomechanical solution that encapsulated multiple Bell Labs innovations into a next generation Chameleon access point.Thermal and mechanical lead for the AMPLE mm-wave wireless project. This project required the development of low volume conformal mechanical designs allowing for seamless cell deployment into our environment.Technical lead of Additive Manufactured Thermal Systems (AMTS) project. This project required the assembling of a multidiscipline team to convert this vision into reality. To date this project has delivered a new Additive Manufactured two-phase cooling platform that reduces product weight/size, increases thermal efficiency, and enables conformal shapes to be built for aesthetics or function.
  • Nokia Bell Labs
    Member Of Technical Staff
Nokia Bell Labs Aug 2011 - Jan 2015
    Dublin, Ireland
As a member of technical staff, I was the thermal lead for the lightRadio project and transferred a novel reliable cooling platform to the wireless business unit.Internally funded to develop reliable active cooling solutions including thermal modelling capability, mechanical designs and electronics. These designs are currently being integrated into our next generation wireless solutions.Solved barriers to commercialization of the reliable active cooling solution which included: developing a piezo fan with US supplier with unprecedented reliability, cost, and airflow performance; reliability tests; multiple design iterations; and multiple product trials. This fan is now commercially available.Designing and developing novel sense and control algorithms and electronics to auto tune the piezo fan in real-time in the field.
  • Trinity College Dublin
    Postdoctoral Researcher
Trinity College Dublin Dec 2009 - Jul 2011
    Dublin, Ireland
In Trinity College Dublin I worked in a SFI funded center called Centre for Telecommunications and Value chain Research (CTVR). As a research fellow my primary focus was on the development and design of a novel micro refrigeration system using micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technologies to thermally control photonics integrated circuits. I also worked extensively on the development of turbulence inducing vortex generators for enhanced cooling within server racks and thermoelectric system modelling.
  • Freelance
    Consultant
    Freelance Dec 2009 - Jul 2011
    Dublin, Ireland
Provided consultancy service to two companies. TrinityHaus, Dublin: compiled and delivered reports on building natural ventilation systems and energy conservation measures in Japan.Life Technologies, Limerick: designed and developed a novel thermal cycling mechanism for a research instrument used in cell therapy.
