About Nick Jeffery

I am an aquatic science biologist (BI-03) with DFO at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in the Marine Conservation Targets research group and adjunct faculty at Dalhousie University. Our team is developing monitoring plans for Canada's Marine Protected Areas, and I am specifically using genetic and genomic tools such as eDNA metabarcoding and whole genome sequencing to study biodiversity, population structure, and connectivity. I am also an active member of the ICES working group on the application of genetics for fisheries and aquaculture.I completed my BSc from the University of Guelph with a major in Marine and Freshwater Biology, followed by a PhD in Integrative Biology with a focus on the genetic diversity of aquatic invertebrates. After my PhD I completed 2 years' of postdoctoral fellowships with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and at Dalhousie University as part of the Canadian Healthy Oceans Network. My publications: http://scholar.google.ca/citations?user=aNnb8N4AAAAJ&hl=en

I am a senior biologist in the Coastal Ecosystem Science Division at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, studying the applications of genomic tools and environmental DNA (eDNA) towards Marine Protected Area design and monitoring. Our work focuses on marine conservation science, connectivity, and biodiversity monitoring.
  • Bedford Institute Of Oceanography
    Postdoctoral Researcher
Bedford Institute Of Oceanography Aug 2015 - Jul 2017
1 Challenger Drive, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
Studying population structure of invasive green crabs and Atlantic salmon using Restriction Site Associated DNA (RAD) single nucleotide polymorphisms and salmon SNP arrays.https://bradburygeneticslab.com/people/past-members/
  • University Of Guelph
    Phd Candidate
University Of Guelph Sep 2009 - Sep 2015
My PhD studied genome size diversity and species diversity in crustaceans from around the world. I conducted field collections, laboratory work, and statistical analyses to measure genome size in ~400 species of crustaceans, and investigated the relationships between genome size, body size, developmental mode, and habitat. I also used DNA barcoding to identify many of my field collections.
  • Biodiversity Institute Of Ontario
    Specimen Photographer
Biodiversity Institute Of Ontario Sep 2008 - Apr 2009
I took part in specimen photography and database input for thousands of vertebrates and invertebrates as part of the DNA Barcode of Life initiative. I was responsible for both macro and microscope-based photography, and each photo is used in the Barcode of Life Datasystems (BOLD) to associate a specimen image with a DNA sequence.
  • Biodiversity Institute Of Ontario
    Field Biologist
Biodiversity Institute Of Ontario May 2008 - Aug 2008
I collected, photographed, and preserved thousands of invertebrates and recorded metadata at seven National Parks across Canada as part of the DNA Barcode of Life project. This involved setting up traps and equipment, including pitfall traps, malaise traps, underwater light traps, and hand collecting terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates.
