Civil Engineer Technician

Greater St. Louis Area

I have many different responsibilities within the Soils Lab. There is the testing of soils such as index testing or the classification of soils. They can come in the form of jar samples or shelby tubes. The classification is achieved with tests such as: Atterberg limits, Particle-size analysis (sieve analysis), and sometimes as simple as visual classifications. Along with that, I have been familiarizing myself with Triaxial strength testing using Trautwein GeoJac Automated Stress Path System equipment. With this equipment and software, it is possible to perform tests such as: R-value tests, Direct shear and Triaxial shear tests, unconfined compression, and hydraulic conductivity tests. I am also experienced in field collection and testing of concrete, grout, and different types of soils. In the field I am certified to test: temperature, slumps, unit weights, yields, air content of concrete, and the coring and sampling of concrete. Back in the lab I can make sure the concrete and grout samples are property cured before capping and testing the strengths. For soils, I primarily collect and test proctors, dry densities, and jar samples from the field and test them in the lab. Along with the collection and testing of samples, I also manage many aspects of the lab. I train and manage new employees as well as interns. I track labor codes and schedules. I also deal with submitting the created data. Depending on the scope of the job, it is as simple as comparing our results to that of the contractors or quality control testing. From there we can implement changes or advise a better way to test the samples or work being performed. Sometimes I submit the data directly to the project manager or project engineer assigned to the project. Sometimes I submit data for the Corps of Engineers proficiency reports into share drives or reports online.

Engineering And Architecture Student Trainee

Carlyle Il

I assisted the construction control representative with the main dam painting project at Carlyle Lake. Some of my duties were testing and monitoring the mils of the paint applied and inspecting the installation of the studs and anodes according to the specifications of the project. I participated in weekly coordination meetings between the contractors, representatives from the lake project office, and representatives over-seeing the contract. I also worked along with the civil engineer technicians. I participated in greasing and cycling of the gates. Along with that included servicing the brakes, motors, and gears. I have also read and recorded the piezometer readings and made gate changes. With the scope of the job I have acquired a CAC card, and was in the midst of becoming familiar with the RMS program. I was also learning how to input the contractor's payrolls and progress payments into RMS when the internship came to an end and I was hired on full-time as a civil engineer technician.
