About Nick Laws, Phd
My interests are broad and encompass all forms of energy use and production. I constantly seek innovative solutions to our energy problems. My long term career goal is to play a part in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by increasing the adoption of renewable energy technologies and energy efficient practices. My expertise lies in optimization of power systems via optimal power flow models, optimal control, and mathematical programming in general. I led the development team for NREL's REopt model during its transition from a private tool to an open source model and API that supports techno-economic analysis of energy systems for cost savings, greenhouse gas reductions, and resilience. At Camus Energy I develop novel software to support the decarbonization of the grid.Decision support tools are a passion of mine, especially under uncertainty and for multiple perspectives. My Ph.D. research focused on integrating distributed energy resource (DER) in ways that support grid-operator objectives as well as DER owner/investor/aggregator objectives. I have used optimization under uncertainty to evaluate battery energy storage bidding strategies in day-ahead and real-time energy markets. I am also a student of Decision Making Under Deep Uncertainty methods to support more robust decisions. I seek work that challenges me to learn new skills as well as flex my optimization chops.
