The main focus of this role was to generate technology proposals for transmission and driveline for 2025 introduction to promote future workstreams for the business. This role encompassed:-Detailed market and industry technology trends including usage of ATS journals and CTI papers-Use of IHS automotive data to create market trends for transmission usage by segment to identify core opportunities by region-Hosting of workshops with engineers and technical specialists to identify technologies, ideas and issues which may enable innovation-Generation of transmission and driveline database with ranking-Creation of proposals by segment (passenger car, heavy duty, high performance, off highway) for technology development ideas to prompt customer engagement-Generation of a CO2 estimation tool with MATlab-Support of content for CTI paper-Creation of documentation for customer engagement for Product GroupI developed from this role a strong understanding of current driveline and transmission technologies and how this can be advanced for future applications and a wide knowledge of transmission types and technologies currently in the market or coming to market. I was also exposed to the politics, funding and infrastructure for R&D project generation. I have developed processes and reference documents for R&D idea generation in a newly formed area of the business. I used this role to motivate and stimulate people to think beyond their day job and provide a forum to express ideas with the intention of giving a platform to build upon.

Ricardo Germany

An opportunity offered to be based at Ricardo's Germany technical centre for 6 months. A Ricardo CV was generated for application, and I was asked to join the NVH team and bring some of my knowledge to the small 2 person team created there. I brought some of my background knowledge of Testlab which is not commonly used in Germany, but is required when multiple projects are on the go. This is an opportunity to get acquainted with the NVH software PAK, improve my German and have a better understanding of how business and the industry operates in another country. Work involved processing data and results, collecting data and preparing setups for tests and measurements.

Midlands Technical Centre

For this period, I was working on the Bugatti Veyron 7spd DCT. My role was to manage, investigate and have reworked faulty/worn gearboxes from customer or production validation vehicles. I worked closely and often directly with the customer to commicate progress and resources to influence timeframe. There was a strict process to adhere to requiring several reports to be completed, with interpretation of end-of-line tests to understand the problem reported, then to strip to investigate transmission condition. Crack detection, gear graphing and hardness testing were used to help with my investigation. I would host a meeting every week with the customer to communicate the status and any outstanding issues.Doing this role, I used Baan stock management systems, gained knowledge of quality inspection techniques and manufacturing control and also advanced gearbox operation and componentry.

Situated at client's Technical Centre at Warwick University for 4 months, responsible for early stage design of air intake system for diesel and petrol engine applications. Responsibilities include, FMEAs, RFQs (request for quotation), DVP (Design verification plan), liaison with customer engineers from several engineering areas (NVH, safety, engine design etc.) and closely with CAD engineers from Ricardo. Shared responsibility for charge air cooling system due to part time project engineer.8 week Lightweighting study for a customer, which I was creating reports, summary sheets and 5-why analysis to understand the weight delta between customer vehicles and competitors. A2mac1 and physical part analysis was used to understand the weight difference seen between alternative designs of powertrain components. Supported meetings with customer to present findings.

Midlands Technical Centre

1. In vehicle test work including using LMS testlab to record data and to then process using colour maps to understand causes of specific sounds of frequencies2. Modal analysis measurements to define flexural and rigid body modes, with one example being used to identify a suitable idle speed. Also used for C.o.G calculations using engine inertia through modal impact for engine.3. Use of acoustic camera, binaural heads,4. Supported prototype build, with NVH update program for customer test vehicles.

Undertaking my industrial placement year with Eaton allowed me to experience many engineering roles. These include software, electrical, design and mechanical engineering activities. I have been heavily involved in a TSB part-funded hybrid MD truck project with Leyland DAF of which I worked directly with suppliers, project constituents and global colleagues.
