PartnerChelexa Biosciences Jun 2009 - PresentChelexa BioSciences, Inc. technology targets PREVENTION of biofilm (bacterial colonization) formation and biofilm related infections. Once formed, biofilms are virtually untreatable with annual treatment costs rising into the billions of dollars. Hospital Acquired Infections along with Diabetic Ulcers/Pressure Ulcers cost US healthcare payers over $65 billion in annual treatment costs. Biofilms are 1000 times more resistant to antibiotics than planktonic (single) bacteria. 60% of medical device implant infections are biofilm related, while 80% plus of human infectious diseases are biofilm related. Staph aureus and Staph epidermidis are the most widely isolated bacteria found to cause biofilm formation and biofilm related infections. Our technology targets PREVENTION of bacterial-to-substrate adherence at the cellular level, thus preventing biofilm formation and biofilm related infections. Biofilm formation and biofilm related infections may be associated with acute and chronic wounds (such as Diabetic and Pressure Ulcers), along with implanted medical devices such as in-dwelling catheters, IUDs, breast implants, contact lenses, pacemakers, ICDs, orthopedic devices and sutures as examples. Laboratory studies have shown that planktonic bacteria typically: attach within minutes, form strongly attached microcolonies within 2-4 hours, develop extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and become increasingly tolerant to antibiotics and evolve into fully mature biofilm colonies within 6-12 hours, shed planktonic bacteria within 2-4 days and rapdily recover from mechanical disruption and reform mature biofilms within 24 hours.
