Able to bring clarity to complex technical challenges and put key technical decisions in the context of company strategy and market opportunity. I get the greatest results possible out of an engineering team.Known as an evangelist for agile development: I've defined agile processes and socialized them with large software teams, improving the determinism of software schedules and keeping software quality high throughout the project life-cycle. I avoid dogmatic tendencies in agile, instead emphasizing the core values of iteration and engineer feedback and keeping the process pragmatic and useful.Deep domain knowledge in cable home devices (set top boxes, cable modems, Wi-Fi routers).CORE COMPETENCIES:• Agile development • Continuous Integration • Roadmap planning• Networking protocols • Video technologies • Embedded devices • Wi-Fi & IoT telemetry• Cloud solutions • Mobile apps • Java, C, C++, Linux, Perl, JavaScript, XML, Git, ClearCase, JIRA

Beginning in 2017, I pivoted my engineering team from video devices (set top boxes) to broadband devices (cable modems, Wi-Fi routers). I mentored the team and provided training, enabling them to contribute to the bottom line immediately. We got a DOCSIS 3.1 eMTA cable modem on a brand new SoC certified at Cable Labs in an impressively short time. We architected and delivered Wi-Fi and IoT telemetry and management features on a range of ARRIS Wi-Fi gateways, increasing sales of those products. We also delivered to the retail market the industry’s first 802.11ax Mesh Wi-Fi Router, beating the competition on schedule and features.Over this period, I managed a team of 35, including software, test and systems engineers, as well as a software product manager. We coordinated with teams in Georgia, Bangalore and Shenzhen. Before the pivot to broadband, I migrated my team out of OCAP middleware and into the new industry standard RDK middleware. We were the first to deliver the software that enabled the deployment of significant numbers of Comcast set top box gateways. Our RDK expertise allowed us to deliver a solution coupled with SeaChange middleware to Liberty Global's operators in Chile, Netherlands and Eastern Europe. We leveraged the same solution to integrate with TiVo middleware for Virgin Media in the UK.I am known as an advocate of Agile development and Continuous Integration. I provided documentation and training on Agile to the broader ARRIS software team, increasing schedule determinism and improving quality throughout project life-cycles.I established a reputation as a strong leader with both senior management and direct reports. I held regular town halls with the engineering team, placing our technical work in the context of company strategy and market opportunities. I mentored team members and delegated responsibility to them, so they felt a sense of ownership and excitement about the work.

Responsible for the Multi-Room DVR program, which integrated Ucentric's MR-DVR technology with industry-standard OCAP middleware and enabled the sale of 4-5 million set top boxes to Time Warner Cable and Shaw Cable. I collaborated with the software leads to architect a robust and very well received MR-DVR solution, beating our competitors on schedule and quality.Prior to that I was responsible for the low-level software on the ICEbox product, which was an ambitious retail set top box that aimed to compete with the likes of TiVo and Replay. The hardware design made use of two SoCs, one from Intel to power a full-featured Adobe Flash UI and the other from Broadcom to efficiently process video, music and photo codecs. Those SoC choices presented serious software challenges, which my team solved.I continued to play a role at Motorola in UI design and implementation, which was my primary role at Ucentric. And I was a primary technical resource at trade shows like CES and NCTA, demonstrating the latest video products from Motorola.During this period, I established my reputation as a strong leader and technical innovator.
  • Ucentric Systems
    Principal Software Engineer
    Ucentric Systems Apr 2001 - Jan 2005

Ucentric created the industry's first Multi-Room DVR via IP protocol; it was acquired by Motorola in 2005. As UI lead, I oversaw the redesign of Ucentric's TV-based Multimedia UI, making it a vital component of customer and trade show demos. I implemented the UI in C-based Gtk+ and then ported it to Java-based AWT. I designed variants of the UI for customers like HP, Cablevision and DirecTV.
