About Nick Stevens
I am a Manager of Label Relations at Naxos of America, the leading classical music distributor in North America. I hold a PhD in Musicology from Case Western Reserve University and a BA in Music from University of Rochester. My core competencies include writing; developing effective responses to a wide range of client questions and requests; project management; clear and proactive communication; sales data analysis; and marketing strategy development. My role consists of equal parts client service management, client relations, and customer success. My portfolio of record label clients includes 100+ accounts, from family-run indie imprints to household-name global brands. Detail-oriented and collaborative, I advance client retention and acquisition goals through routine meetings and proactive communication. I use data analysis to advise on issues from technical compliance to business development and territory-specific marketing strategy. In a prior marketing role at the same firm, I created and managed the online presence and promo of ArkivMusic.com, a website specializing in physical recordings of classical and jazz music. I wrote engaging and informative content for the website, blog, newsletters, and social media channels, showcasing the latest releases, collections, and features of the music my team - and our customers - love. I also created product pages for the website, and collaborated with distributed labels and the Naxos graphics team to maintain the site's visual identity while spotlighting key releases and product collections. I collaborated with my team as well as artists and labels, rapidly learning new skills and tools to enhance existing digital marketing strategies. I also revived long-dormant email and social media marketing channels for the physical music catalog HBDirect, developing a unique "voice" for the brand in its expanding online presence. Eventually taking on added duties (thus developing the new role of Sales & Marketing Specialist), I worked directly with public radio stations, symphony and opera gift shops, indie record shops, and educational nonprofits to provide physical classical music recordings and books to help organizations advance their brands while entertaining and informing their communities.I am passionate about sharing the joy and value of classical, jazz, and global traditional music genres with a growing audience on behalf of a diverse range of clients. I bring a unique perspective and set of experiences to the Label Relations team as a musicologist with a higher ed research and teaching background.

Label Manager
Equal parts client relations and customer success professional, a Label Manager in the music distribution world serves as the primary contact between record labels and their distributor. In this case, the latter is my employer, Naxos of America, the largest distributor of domestic and global independent classical music labels in the Americas.I convey information about record labels' upcoming releases to coworkers, with due emphasis on high-priority titles and associated sales and marketing campaigns. In turn, I keep labels informed about the policies and processes that help us deliver thousands of titles annually while maintaining high standards for quality and service. In some cases, I liaise between my department and music retailers.Monitoring industry trends, media coverage, and internal sales data, I advise both Naxos of America coworkers and labels on matters such as promotional strategy, sales and marketing campaign opportunities, artist merchandise signing opportunities at live shows, and more. When labels succeed, the distributor succeeds; my role is therefore to do everything I can to set labels' releases up for success in the ever-changing markets of the Americas.
D2C Marketing & Accounts Specialist
When classical and jazz fans come to ArkivMusic.com or one of its social media channels, they should feel the excitement of receiving a new physical recording in advance—of having and holding their music, of hearing their playback device whir to life, of reading informative liner notes and using the album artwork as a decorative flourish and conversation-starter. There are some experiences with the music you love that a streaming music subscription can only supplement, and never replace.I generate product pages; market albums and album collections via twice- or thrice-weekly email newsletters and social posts; work with our graphics team to create visually engaging banners, videos, and logo variants; and curate, write, and edit a blog. In other words, I am the person who makes that possible for Naxos of America's in-house e-commerce channel. I also help facilitate the online experience for our physical catalog partner, HBDirect, and recently designed the email marketing funnel and social media presence for this retail channel's new website.More recently, I have supplemented this activity with B2B sales projects, ensuring that retail shops from indie to international; e-commerce partners; artists at their post-concert meet-and-greets; and your local symphony or opera gift shop all have access to the latest, greatest recordings from Naxos of America's vast distribution network.
Ecommerce Production Associate - Musicologist
I began my time at Naxos of America creating product pages for the ArkivMusic retail website, a task involving editing of label-provided ad copy; sourcing and/or correction of metadata; product database maintenance; and, shortly before a promotion, extensive collaboration with teammates to launch a new website that maintained existing standards, provided an all-new appearance and UX, and included a rich and informative blog. I took over the sourcing and creation of blog content in January 2022.
Visiting Assistant Professor
In this limited-term, sabbatical-replacement role, I taught classes near-daily using Zoom, including a required undergraduate intro course, a required graduate seminar, and an elective graduate seminar that was 100% self-designed and -implemented; planned, wrote, and recorded asynchronous lectures using Panopto and other A/V capture and editing tools; and mandated 2x semesterly 1:1 Zoom check-in meetings with every last one of my students across all these courses. Through these meetings as well as with online course management systems, I monitored student progress and mentored the leading music performers, administrators, advocates, and teachers of tomorrow, ensuring that students felt encouraged and empowered despite the global crisis that ultimately led to this position remaining fully remote throughout its ten-month duration. I served on the School of Music's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Committee for its inaugural year, helping colleagues brainstorm ways to make a fairly socioeconomically and regionally homogenous institution become more welcoming to students and staff from other backgrounds and parts of the world. And, given a contractual 70/20/10 split of teaching, research, and service, I was able to curate, edit, and publish a multi-author forum on a major livestreamed opera premiere, as well as research and write a major research article that subsequently appeared in the journal Opera Quarterly. Throughout my term, I maintained prompt, professional communication and went above and beyond in my mentorship of students, ultimately taking a self-planned and -funded trip to Wichita in 2021 during which I organized socially distanced outdoor meetings of my classes and met with my students and coworkers in-person.

In this seasonal role, I presented information and print marketing materials about Museum programs and policies to members of the public at outdoor concerts, markets, festivals, fairs, etc. My tasks ranged from sharing basic facts about the Museum (such as admission, events, collections, and ongoing/future special exhibitions) to adapting memorized PR and marketing points for individual community members on the fly. As needed, I also accompanied the staff of the Studio Go mobile art van in distributing free art supplies to kids and leading creative activities for visitors of all ages.
