Profile bio

About Nick Anthis

My passions are using science and technology to improve human health and the environment. Building on a scientific background in biophysical and biomedical research, today I work in science administration, currently serving as Senior Program Officer for Special Initiatives at the University of California Office of the President (UCOP).I previously served as Program Manager for Atomwise, a biotech startup using artificial intelligence to discover new drugs. Before that, I was a Program Officer at UCOP, first working with UC Research Initiatives, where I helped manage scientific research grant programs across the UC system, and then with the California Breast Cancer Research Program, where I focused on environmental health and health policy. Previously, I served as an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), working in the area of science diplomacy and international cooperation in science. My scientific background is in biochemistry and biophysics, first at Texas A&M University and then at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. During my graduate studies, I founded a blog on science and politics, The Scientific Activist, while I pursued research in structural biology. I continued my research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), working on protein NMR and focusing in particular on characterizing “dark” states—such as intermediates in protein-protein interactions and aggregation—that are often inaccessible to conventional methods in structural biology. My scientific work has centered on providing insight into the molecular basis of life, but it also has implications for understanding and treating various diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. I have published several scientific papers, plus papers on science blogging, science diplomacy, and global challenges.

Listed skills include Biochemistry, Science, Protein Expression, Research, and 27 others.
