About Nick Ball

Data science has been at the heart of my career for 20 years, and for the past 10 years, I've focused on data science software platform development and machine learning. My education includes a Geology degree from Cambridge University and an MSc and PhD in Astronomy from the University of Sussex in the UK. I came to North America for my postdoctoral work, where I directed research and publications in the nascent astronomy data mining community.Moving to Canada’s Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, I worked on the CANFAR project (a precursor to cloud computing, but for astronomy), and collaborated with Silicon Valley startup Skytree to create one of the first large-scale astronomy data mining systems in the world.Skytree recruited me to California where I became lead data scientist on more than 20 customer projects and took on both written and presentation communication on the product and its potential uses. When Skytree was acquired by Infosys, I stayed with the team, leading Proof of Concept for a project showing how supervised machine learning can help detect fraudulent transactions and leading the group’s data science work.Next Oracle brought me in to work on a new data science platform; when the project did not move forward, I joined Dotscience, an end-to-end data science platform using MLOps (the principles of software DevOps for machine learning), for their platform's underlying architecture to deliver value to data scientist users. After Dotscience lost funding and was closed by its parent company DDN due to the pandemic, I joined Paperspace in a freelance role as their first full-stack/generalist data scientist. Paperspace is a well-known cloud platform that provides access to GPU hardware, with over 500,000 users. On top of this foundation sits Paperspace Gradient, their end-to-end data science + MLOps platform. My role spans the entirety of functions relevant to data science in this context.I'm a confident introvert with a deep understanding of end-to-end data science platforms. I like to present and communicate in blogs, articles, publications, and presentations to audiences of all types. I'm openminded, highly organized, responsible, honest, logical and even-tempered.If you would like to connect or if there is any way I can help you, please feel free to reach out.

  • Dotscience
    Principal Data Scientist (Product)
    Dotscience Sep 2019 - May 2020
    London, London, Gb
I became the leading data scientist at Dotscience, a startup with an end-to-end data science platform that uses MLOps (the principles of software DevOps for machine learning), as they continued to develop their platform underlying architecture to deliver value to data scientist users. In a role that was de facto chief data scientist and head of product, I worked with the CEO and VP Engineering to shape the development of their Data Science platform with an underlying MLOps architecture that delivered specific value to data scientist users.A wearer of many hats, I worked across teams and provided strategic input on product direction, developed documentation and tutorials, prepared demos, and was the company go-to for data science and machine learning.I revamped the company roadmap to focus on MLOps, creating and prioritizing 80+ roadmap items. I developed demonstrations on Dotscience functionality for data scientists and conducted extensive product testing from the advanced user point of view, working with front- and back-end engineers on feedback.I wrote 5 technical blog entries on topics such as why data scientists need DevOps for machine learning.Dotscience closed in May 2020 due to COVID-19.
  • Oracle
    Lead Data Scientist
    Oracle Oct 2018 - May 2019
    Austin, Texas, Us
Oracle brought me onto the newly acquired datascience.com team to work on the Oracle Data Science Service. Working closely with the ODSS engineering team, I was bridge between outward-facing customers and inward-facing product and engineers on data science work. I learned the produce and environment and worked on product directions on algorithms, the data science process, product integrations, and research.Oracle implemented a company-wide Reduction In Force in 2019 that affected our team.
  • Infosys
    Principal Data Scientist
    Infosys Mar 2017 - Oct 2018
    Bangalore, Karnataka, In
When Skytree was acquired by Infosys, I stayed with the team as Principal Data Scientist, working on the world-class machine learning product and serving as technical data scientist with salespeople and engineers.I led Proof of Concept for a project showing how supervised machine learning can help detect fraudulent transactions and leading the group's data science work, developing the product roadmap and generating dozens of Jira tickets and epics for the engineers. I also updated Skytree demo material that showcased machine learning for uses such as credit risk, customer churn, spam filtering and more.
  • Skytree, Inc.
    Staff Data Scientist
    Skytree, Inc. Nov 2012 - Mar 2017
    San Jose, Ca, Us
After our successful collaboration, Skytree’s CEO recruited me to move to California to work with their world-class data scientists in a role that combined research and Proof of Concept projects with product roadmaps, feedback and demos.I led the benchmarking project that proved that Skytree was more than 100 times faster than competition and served as lead data scientist on more than20 client projects. Two projects, for SETI and Lawrence Berkeley Lab, used machine learning to classify signals from space and analyze large-scale structures in the universe.I also generated a great deal of materials about Skytree for the website, including videos and blogs on our technical differentiators, instructions for use, and demos of machine learning across topics. I outlined, scripted and did live demos and represented Skytree at trade shows.I held a contract position from Nov 2012 - Sep 2013, and was promoted from Data Scientist to Staff Data Scientist in January 2016.
  • National Research Council Canada
    Assistant Research Officer
National Research Council Canada Jul 2009 - Jul 2012
    Ottawa, Ontario, Ca
I joined Canada’s Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics to work on the CANFAR project (a precursor to cloud computing, but for astronomy) in a role that blended astronomy and data science.I completed “Data Mining and Machine Learning in Astronomy,” one of the first major reviews in the world on this topic, and led the Luminosity Function Science Working group of the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey, which showed that machine learning can resolve which galaxies are in the Virgo Cluster. To create one of the first large-scale astronomy data mining systems in the world, I collaborated with Skytree, a Silicon Valley startup with a machine learning platform, to create Skytree: CANFAR+Skytree.
  • University Of Illinois At Urbana-Champaign
    Postdoctoral / Research Scientist
University Of Illinois At Urbana-Champaign Nov 2004 - Jun 2009
    Champaign, Il, Us
I did my first postdoc in the Department of Astronomy and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications for extragalactic astronomy, within the context of the Laboratory for Cosmological Data Mining, serving as Principal and Co-Investigator on funding grants, including from NASA.I produced 3 publications of original research in the Astrophysical Journal (adding to those from my PhD work), including the first sample of quasars with accurate distances from just images, and I created some of the first applications of machine learning to astronomical datasets of over 100 million objects, using NCSA supercomputers.
