I was responsible for scheduling, division budgets and faculty performance, and we consistently met or exceeded expectations every year.

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pharmacy. Physician Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship program. The ASP is a multi-disciplinary group tasked with improving the use of antimicrobials in our hospital. Through guidelines, education and research our goal is to ensure our patients are receiving optimal therapy for infections while minimizing the risk of side effects, preventing antimicrobial resistance and reducing unnecessary usage. In the first 6 months of the ASP we were able to show a 40-60% reduction in certain high-risk broad spectrum antibiotics.

The division of infectious diseases and immunology consists of 8 physicians (6 ID, 2 immunologists) and performs clinical consultations for inpatients at Connecticut Children's Medical Center and outpatients from throughout the state of Connecticut. As Interim Medical Director in the six months prior to taking on the position permanently I oversaw the successful rollout of our new immunology services, improved our clinic consultation efficiency to grow monthly outpatient visits by 35%, and initiated new collaborative agreements to manage children with positive neonatal screens for immune deficiency, and children with Velocardiofacial syndrome.In the full role I oversaw hiring of new a physician, and the division demonstrated continued year-on-year growth to nearly double the volume when I entered it. I led the successful accreditation of a Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellowship, as well as ongoing academic work in teaching, research, and co-directing the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.

As a Fellow I was responsible for inpatient and outpatient consults, as well as teaching of medical students and residents.I undertook a translational research project investigating the immune responses of premature infants to viral infections, in addition to ongoing contributions to industry-sponsored clinical research trials.I continued to teach my own communication skills curriculum which I developed as a resident, and I am writing up a two-year research project based on a survey of medical student attitudes before and after I introduced that curriculum fulltime. In the last year I also redesigned the first year medical student curriculum at SUNY Upstate to include more patient-centered care. I added a lecture, several small-group role-play sessions, given faculty development and guidance and co-written two study guides for students and faculty for the course. This development brings the SUNY Upstate curriculum firmly in line with 21st century medical education.In late 2008 I was selected as the eMedicine.com 'Contributor of the month' and my article on HIV was selected as their core HIV article. In 2009 I won the SUNY Upstate award for research by a fellow or resident. In 2011 I was awarded the Gold Humanism award for Humanism and Excellence in Teaching for the second time.

As a resident my responsibilities include inpatient and outpatient management of well and ill children, and the teaching of medical students and junior staff.I have established a reputation among patients, parents and staff for being a caring and effective physician. In my teaching role I created and taught a novel pediatric communication skills curriculum for medical students and residents, and presented the concept at two national meetings. In 2006 I won two awards for my teaching and humanistic approach to medicine, one of which was voted on by the medical students.Outside of my formal job requirements I have edited or written over a dozen articles in pediatric infectious disease for medical education websites and have several publications in the peer-reviewed literature. I have also contributed to several clinical research studies. In 2007 I won a departmental award for my scholarly and research activity.

In this short summer-position I worked on investigating a novel gene therapy technology. I created a portfolio of primary human cell lines to test the product on, fully explored its potential in the cell lines, and reported my findings back to the research group.In addition I produced the research group's supply of this protein for use in applications other than cell culture systems, and researched the implications of putting the product into humans.I acquired a portfolio of skills in molecular biology, including DNA manipulation and cloning, protein purification, and cell culture techniques which I took forward into my PhD research.
