About Nick Brestoff

Preventing Litigation: An Early Warning System, etc. earned six 5-star reviews on Amazon.com/books, and I saw, and was intrigued by, deep learning. I had retired from practicing law in California (1975-2014) but I was about to become an inventor. How? Before law school at U.S.C., I earned a B.S. in Engineering Systems from UCLA and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering Science from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). In late 2015, I founded Intraspexion (now an LLC) with a team of co-founders. As a proof of concept, we built & successfully tested a deep learning model for "employment discrimination." Out of 20,401 Enron emails, none of which were used to build the model, it scored & ranked only 25 for human review & 4 of the emails were the True Positives we had previously found, and they were among the 25 emails the model had reported out. Better still, since no one would read 20,401 emails, the model functioned as a very precise filter & produced a User Interface which scored & ranked the 25 emails for human review. That's about one-eighth of only one percent. See www.intraspexion.com/mvp. My patent journey: On July 1, 2016, I filed the Provisional which led to my first patent. Title: "Using Classified & Deep Learning Algorithms to Identify Risk and Provide Early Warning." No. 9,552,548 ("the '548 patent"). Because I described the risks of getting sued & the potential loss of -- or impairments to -- personal or company reputations, claim 1 is for "threats or risks of interest." A second patent, No. 9,760,850, has the same priority date and title, & small but meaningful changes in the claims.By the end of 2017, the '548 patent & six additional patents (continuations-in-part of the '548 patent) were awarded. All seven share the same Priority Date of July 1, 2016. In 2018, along with co-inventor Jagannath Rajagopal, Intraspexion received its eighth Patent, No. 10,095,992 ("the '992 patent"). The '992 patent is the first issued patent to use both deep learning & blockchain in the claims. As of 9/19/2022, there were 20 more such patents. While the '992 patent focuses on the risk of violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). None of the 20+ patents that followed the '992 mention the FCPA in either the Detailed Description or the claims.I'm interested in working with a company that manages risk for corporate clients. The market would be companies with corporate Law Departments. They should be the first to see the emails that currently show up as the "smoking guns" in the complaints that are blind-siding them now.

Intraspexion was built w/o employees, offices, or VC money. In September of 2015, we opted for a patents-first strategy and, with help from patent counsel CotmanIP.com, I filed a provisional application on July 1, 2016. My first patent application was filed on September 27, 2016, and was allowed and issued in less than 4 months. From there, we built a family of 8 patents (issued in 2017 and 2018). For details, please see www.intraspexion.com/patents.

Recent Book #1: I was the lead co-author of Preventing Litigation: An Early Warning System to Get Big Value Out of Big Data, which was published by Business Expert Press on August 25, 2015. During my final editing effort, I saw "deep learning" and called it out "in passing" (on two pages, 169 and 197, if memory serves) as potential competition for the technology (based on taxonomies) that my co-author, W. H. Inmon, had presented in the middle five chapters. After the book was published, there were two results: (1) Preventing Litigation was listed for sale on Amazon.com/books, and earned six 5-star reviews from readers. Better still, the reader comments were glowing and much appreciated; and (2) I began a personal quest to learn everything I could about "deep learning," which led to eight (8) U.S. patents and, of these patents, where I was the sole inventor on seven of them, and many of them, including the first patent, No. 9,552,548 and the seventh patent, No. 9,760,850, have a priority date of July 1, 2016. Recent Book #2: I wrote AI Concepts for Business Applications as a no-math book. On January 19, 2020, it was listed as one of 50 Business & Tech books to read by the Thought Leaders @ Thinkers360.com. See https://www.thinkers360.com/50-business-and-technology-books-from-thinkers360-thought-leaders/ In this book, I present my patent journey, with examples of innovative concepts taken from the eight (8) U.S. patents issued to me in 2017 and 2018, where I was the sole inventor on six applications and the lead co-inventor on the other two. With one exception, my patents focus on applications of deep learning algorithms for text to identify and provide an early warning of a "threat or risk of interest." The goal of my book is to enable YOU to use deep learning for innovations of your own. For the Deep Learning Patent Land Rush as of December 3, 2019, see my article in InsideBIGDATA at https://insidebigdata.com/2019/12/10/the-deep-learning-patent-land-rush/
