I headed the Intelligence Innovation (In2) Laboratory. In2 researches future generations of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications. Despite recent advances and enthusiasm in AI, most of its current applications are fairly simple or narrow. In2’s research aims to create science and technology that will surmount these limitations and significantly advance people’s ability to improve their lives. While I as there, In2 included several teams, whose foci included using natural language understanding (NLU), computer vision, deep learning, data analytics, reasoning, planning, and the use of AI to create significant advances in personal assistants, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and the Internet of Things (IoT).

I joined Yahoo after it acquired SkyPhrase, the NLP startup I founded. I led a team building next-generation Deep Natural Language Understanding (NLU) technology.

SkyPhrase developed a Deep Natural Language Understanding (NLU) technology that substantially exceeded the prior state of the art in the richness of language it could understand and the precision with which it could do so. SkyPhrase deployed data analytics services (for web traffic data and sports statistics) and search services for (Twitter, email, music, and flights). We were funded by Han Huang and the Breakout Labs division of the Thiel Foundation. Yahoo acquired SkyPhrase in 2013.

I directed the Human-Level Intelligence Laboratory where we performed research in artificial intelligence (AI), cognitive architectures, machine reasoning, and computational linguistics.
