BEAMZ is a Community Interest Company, developing the use of Coppice Woodland Poles as engineering structural members, to make beautiful high performance bicycles. BEAMZ are putting highly sustainable, carbon negative, locally produced material head-to-head with the best structural materials available. This synergystically creates three vital impacts, helping climate-change, making the frames requires less than 5% of the energy compared to an aluminium frame, wildlife diversity by providing a market for material from coppice managed woodland and in the future creating many high-wellbeing jobs and volunteering opportunities.

Bid work involves understanding a Request for Quotation and creating an engineering concept as the basis for a winning bid at lightening speed. I used my knowledge base and innovation skills and customer focus to achieve wins sometimes in areas where I had no previous experience. Concepts modelled in SolidWorks were used to produce renderings to illustrate the bids.

I was responsible for the design development and testing of key components in the companies innovative technology. The company achieved substantial ETI funding to develop a novel grid scale energy storage solution and used it to build a “Dream team” to develop the technology. The environment represented an incredible learning opportunity and in addition to consolidating skills with SolidWorks, I gained a fascinating insight into super-alloys, coatings, tribology and thermodynamics.

ULTRaMo Ltd is a spin-out company from NeQstep with the aim of developing and commercialising a high efficiency internal combustion engine (ICE). The engine has double the efficiency of the current ICEs and is scalable to replace them in all their applications making this a commercialisation with hugh potential.

NeQstep provides innovation and engineering consultancy specialising in the commercialisation of novel ideas. As Technical Director I provide of technical cohesion across multidiscipline teams and technical problem solving. Areas of expertise include: heat transfer and cooling, energy management, thermodynamics electronic systems, high-tech materials, radiation control and optical systems.

Responsible for identifying technology within the University, suited and capable of commercial exploitation.

Leading a team of twelve including displays engineers, scientist, analysts, IP specialist and a project manager. Responsible for monitoring market requirements and technological developments to identify product opportunities, and develop to prototype level.

A member of the Research Team on a variety of projects and technologies and gained a thorough grounding in display technology.

Working with Mike Whipps I gained experience of PCs and Networks. It was an interesting time which covered the introduction of Windows and the rise of PC networks to displace the mainframe in business. Mike had a huge knowledge of PC architecture and network protocols.
