As an intern of this department, I was a part of two groups, one of which focused on patient processes in the operating room and another which concentrated on development of the emergency room. Under the OR group, I worked on projects that included direct observation of processes as well as data analysis of patient cases. Two of the primary issues I was tasked with finding solutions to were improving turn around times between surgeries and working to minimize surgical product waste. Under the ER group, I observed the movement of patients through the department from admission to discharge and recorded variance in process based on emergency severity index with a goal of improving throughput.

Throughout my year as a research assistant under Dr. Philip Spinella, I worked primarily on two projects. One was a pediatric ECMO outcomes registry aimed at improving the practice of anticoagulation while on extracorporeal support. The other was a thrombin generation study with hopes of creating a deeper understanding of child clot strength. Both studies allowed for me to make regular visits to the PICU floor, shadow consent processes, attain basic lab training, and work with patient chart and statistical programs. I absorbed information about progress notes, lab flow sheets, and doctor notes. Being a research assistant gave me an overview of the start to finish process of medical studies.

As the department's intern, I analyzed statistics of patient feedback on doctors associated with Northside and attended conferences on how to improve the efficiency and quality of patient stays. I was also given the opportunity to showcase predictive analytics skills through identifying the largest areas of potential development in the hospital and presented my findings to colleagues and superiors. The goal of my work was to identify which patients were not receiving the highest quality of care and why so that process changes could be made to prevent the same issues from reoccurring.

As the unit's intern, I routinely shadowed patient rounds and was responsible for checking in on patients and notifying nurses to assist with anything of which I was unqualified to do. I also had conversations with patients throughout their stay to form relationships and improve quality of care. I learned about HIPAA compliance and attained in room experience from shadowing charge nurses, physicians, and PCTs when appropriate. I was also given an opportunity to shadow several surgeries in the operating room. Furthermore, on days when the floor was slow, I was allowed to shadow personnel on the respiratory unit as well as emergency room, which I happily took advantage of.
