About Nick Francis
Nick is an award-winning engineer, experienced manager, and passionate educator. He has a track record of delivering innovative solutions to complex infrastructure problems. Having served for 16 years as an Officer in the Royal Engineers he has extensive operational military experience and is acutely aware of the impact, and fragility, of our built environment. As the founding director of Imagine Engineering Nick helps clients develop high-functioning project teams, drawing on technical expertise and military planning and leadership skills. Working with the Get It Right Initiative he has pioneered a range of education programmes to address the root causes of error within the construction industry. Nick regularly lectures at a number of universities and works with Bridges to Prosperity to tackle rural isolation throughout the developing world. Nick won the “Operational Engineering Award” for his design and construction of emergency Ebola hospitals in Sierra Leone, his designs for emergency flood defences saved the town of Romsey from catastrophic flooding, and he played a leading role in protecting military camps in Afghanistan from very large vehicle borne bombs.Nick developed a deep understanding of practical construction through his role as a manager for heavy civil infrastructure works on the Westfield Stratford City site. He then gained an appreciation for consulting whilst working and as a design engineer at Arup. Throughout his military career Nick honed his leadership and management skills, including commanding a squadron of over 200 soldiers on operations in Africa, the Middle East and the UK. As a Principal Engineer at Eadon Consulting he conducted highly technical design and analysis of complex moving structures. Nick lives in Sheffield with his two young daughters. Most weekends he can be found running in the Peak District, or exploring a museum with his kids.
