About Nick Francis

What does the production company of the future look like? Some thoughts: - Audiences are more dispersed and attention poor than ever. The tools to communicate with them have never been more powerful. - Everyone is a storyteller. We have the tools of a production company on our cell phones. Tools to create and share those stories. If you can make a video on your phone for negligible cost, what is the additional value we add that makes our work worth many thousands of dollars?- The pandemic forced us all to work remotely, forcing all of us to rethink how we source and deliver the best work at the most competitive prices.- How can technology assist with something as complex, physical, and creative as video production? Digital freelancer networks can be useful, but they only deal with one step in the process and are unreliable. How can the whole production be supported by tech infrastructure?- Workers have realised the value of their freedom and labour. Companies must lead with their values and culture to attract the best. With Casual Films, we are answering these questions and building that company. Lead by strong values creating a culture of teamwork, quality, and decency, it’s the most efficient and dependable way for Global 2000 and Fortune 500 businesses to access all the content they need to succeed at scale. Experienced, dependable producers backed by best-in-class digital infrastructure. Briefing, creative, resourcing, production, and reporting, all under one platform, making it easier than ever to commission, monitor and deliver impactful work every time. From eight studios all over the world, and drawing on a network of over 1,500 vetted professionals, our team know exactly how to solve your business challenges with creatively astute video. In 2023 we have delivered 672 projects for some of the largest and most exciting brands in the world so you can be confident we’ve got your back.Follow me and come on the journey with us.

Over the years, Casual Films has produced over 20,000 films for some of the world's largest, most challenging and exciting companies. We've grown to include nine offices in London, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Melbourne, Sydney, Barcelona and Hong Kong. We still try to stay true to our core ethos: working with great people, producing great films and making our clients happy by surpassing their expectations.Casual's first commission, back in 2006, was travel video blogs for Expedia with a couple of camcorders and a laptop. Despite this being the early days for online video, we realised that traditional methods for making business films were too time consuming and expensive for the digital world. We started pitching our lightweight, high quality approach to other brands. Our work won Best Work at the Recruitment Advertising Awards in both 2009 and 2011 - the premier event in the industry. That saw the company take a big leap into the world of recruitment marketing and employee comms - a world we've made our home.

For most people the way into the creative industries is via a three or six month unpaid internship. This limits access to all but the significantly privileged. This theme is reflected by the limited socio-economic backgrounds among those working for production, creative and media companies. If our industry is the mouthpiece for business and culture, how can it be representative if it fails to properly reflect the views, ideas and backgrounds that make up our great nation? The Casual Academy exists to broaden access to the media industry. It provides 18 to 25 year olds with hands-on film training while making films for charities. This training is provided by filmmakers who mentor them through the production of a film for a small local charity. As a result the charity gets a promotional film and the young people get a piece for their showreel, and the experience of working to a brief from a real client. The course is designed to give the young people experience of the four main roles in the production process. Namely: creative/scriptwriter, producer, director, editor. The finished film is then presented to the charity at a premiere, which is attended by the young people’s friends and family. There is then a further career advice session to help them understand where to go next.

Simultaneously a very clear manual for commissioners and makers of brand video, a passionate manifesto for best practice and a thought-provoking study of the capacities of moving image to influence hearts and minds.”- Patrick Russell, Author & Senior Curator (Non-Fiction), BFI“Insightful, current, essential"- David Lennon, Global Creative Director, Vice MediaVideo is big news. Everyone is doing it. You need to be, but how do you avoid getting burned? How can you ensure proper returns from it? The New Fire explains what makes video the most powerful communications medium on earth. It shows you how to define your audience, your strategy, and find and tell stories that deliver results. Video is The New Fire, this book will help you harness it: powering your brand and your business to new levels.“A fabulous repository of wisdom and case studies all underlining one central point, one which cannot be repeated too often: video is special, there is no fame factory like it.”- Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman, Ogilvy UK“If you have one hour to create an effective content strategy, you should spend 55 minutes reading this book and 5 minutes drafting your plan. The New Fire challenges traditional corporate thinking and shows how to create magic to capture the hearts and minds of any audience.”- Catalina Schveninger, Global Head of Learning, Vodafone"Comprehensive and illuminating, The New Fire sets business filmmaking alight."- Seth Goolnik, Unscripted Content, Snapchat

I started running on the floor - delivering scripts to the presenters and escaping moments before the cameras went live. I then started a production based role, working my way up to AP on the bridge to daytime television, producing a wide range of interviews, from Ben Fogel to Noddy Holder. I left to film the Mongol Rally for online travel company Expedia.co.uk.
