HMY Group is an international leader in manufacturing solutions for commercial spaces. Radford is its UK subsidiary, and I lead it. Our client list is all industry leaders, including Vodafone, DSG, Tesco, Starbucks, Dixon and Asda. Role: Leadership of this engineering subsidiary with clients in the UK, Norway, Sweden, Turkey, Italy, much of Eastern Europe and Ireland. Managing major supplier relationships in China and India. Around 250 permanent staff, with total numbers flexed to meet demands. Achievements:• Transformed the business from a focus on a limited range of manufacturing to an engineering solutions and product designer with major project management capacity.• Increased turnover to £40m from £25m, well above sector norms, while boosting profitability despite challenging markets, winning six blue chip sole supplier arrangements.• Designed engineering change procedures ensuring customer ordered changes were identified and financed, reducing stock obsolescence. • Introduced a team of Inventor and Solid Edge designers, linked to the company’s product creation capacity. • Successfully negotiated supplier relationships with engineering component suppliers in China and India that guaranteed high-margin sales while ensuring UK standards.• Won increased market share in a competitive market by increasing materials and product sourcing from China and India while providing UK levels of customer service and engineering design.• Built “trusted adviser” roles with major international plc clients, being brought earlier and earlier into the solution design process through a team of concept designers that became the industry’s top choice. • Improved margin by diversifying away from Radford’s traditional work and winning new clients, including the Scottish Government, the development of the Birmingham Bullring and Devon County Council.• Represented the UK business during its acquisition by HMY, leading on the due diligence prior to sale.

Carrier is a world leader in environmental control systems, including heating and air conditioning. Role: Leading a team of Design Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers and others to design and produce market leading solutions for national and multinational industry-leading clients. • Grew turnover by 30% to £25m, with a Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) of more than 30%.• Built delivery capacity to manufacture these increased sales, including significant engineering capital investment schemes sourced from overseas and installed over holiday periods to reduce disruption.• Developed a QAD MRP systems, leading to stock accuracy of 98%. • Significantly improved quality and efficiency by introducing Lean thinking to the business, and building an industry leading Project Management Department. • Introduced and maintained the momentum of a continuous improvement system, including achieving ISO14001, ISO18001, ISO9001 and Investors in People accreditation. • Successfully took ownership of Radford’s demerger from Linde and integration into the UTC Group.

Linde is the world’s largest industrial gases manufacturer. A multinational engineering conglomerate, it is based in Germany. Role: Reinvention and delivery of the company’s core operational engineering processes, while improving the underlying commercial position. • Boosted staff retention by introducing the Institute of Mechanical Engineers graduate mentoring scheme. • Led post-acquisition integration with Linde’s operational practices for the UK business. • Turned around the company’s operational performance, introducing proper management information, KPIs and an improved focus on meeting customer targets. • Successfully introduced Total Quality Management and Kaizen, transferring knowledge from the automotive industry to this contrasting engineering environment. • Improved staff morale and efficiency by renegotiating work terms with the UNITE trade union, including new shift patterns and introducing banked hours.
