It is transparently evident that we live on a tiny blue dot in a vast universe and must look after each other and our home to survive and thrive as a species. We must evolve to a world of love rather than greed and fear.If we listen to each other, we can solve all our problems. I had a call 50 years ago to make helping us listen to each other my life’s work. It still is!I have been a Samaritan (listening to potentially suicidal people), a Relate counsellor (working with troubled couples), an internal organisation development consultant, coach, facilitator, and trainer, and, since 1982, a freelancer. I’ve worked with individuals, teams, and organisations of all sizes and varieties.A glorious highlight was to coach people from six countries in East and Central Africa. My coaching, counselling, training and facilitating are all about listening and helping people listen to each other.MethodsAppreciative Inquiry encourages us to search for what works (there is always something) and create more of it. A team wanted to work better. I asked the members to share stories about when they had done great work together. Their stories lifted their spirits and confidence. Then, I asked them how they would love things to be. Their summary was “Transforming Lives”. They dug deep to imagine what that meant for their clients and worked together to achieve this. Appreciative Inquiry is less effort and much more fun than the grind of solving problems.Cocounselling is a simple way for two people to help each other profoundly. You take turns (half an hour each way is typical). One person is the client, and the other is the counsellor. The client can explore anything in total confidence. The counsellor pours on love, attention, listening, and acceptance and encourages clients to express their feelings about their issues fully. You get new insights when you express sadness, fear, embarrassment, anger, boredom, happiness or joy and feel heard. Taking turns helps you think more clearly and act more powerfully. It’s easy to learn, and anyone can do it.Core Process is a quick story-based way to help someone find their purpose and unique talent. They get two words they are excited about. The words are all beautiful. Would you like to meet “Risking Love,” “Breathing Life,” “Awakening Souls,” or “Inspiring Magnificence?” The core process enables people to discover the best of who they are. It gives people a compass and releases energy.I want to spread these practices to increase listening and love in our world. Contact me if you share this dream or want my help.
