As many undergraduate Communicative Disorders students shift from classrooms to hands on experience Junior year, they get great experience and knowledge of what it is like to work in a clinical setting working with a broad spectrum of speech and language disorders. This clinic also has an Audiology sound booth with testing equipment as well, which all undergrads are to be tested on and observed handling. My experience with this internship-style program includes: • Observing at Oxford Elementary School in the Speech Therapy room• Observing at the University of Mississippi Speech Hearing Center o Evaluations o Assessments o Therapy o Diagnostic Testing• Standardized• Non-standardized o Audiology testing• Sign Language o Classroom learning included: • American Sign Language (ASL) • Manual Communications (Pigeon Signed English) o Teaching 2nd grade students ASL in a 8-weeks hands on integrated program in the Gifted and talented classrooms at Oxford Elementary o Volunteering to sign Christmas songs at the Scott Center, which provides services for severely mentally and physically challenged students o Participated in a campus-wide “Sign Rave” which raised awareness for deafness o Communicates fluently with a deaf student• In depth semester long research project with a group to study various standardized and non-standardized test that can be administered for different disorders in Early Intervention programs (birth- 36 months)• Completed a semester long study on all aspects of Autism• Workshop on how to write a professional level diagnostic report for professionals, parents, and other Speech therapist in the field• Gained all required undergraduate observation hours (25) in speech and audiology as administered by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
