According to OPM, the official title for a GS-1640 job classification is “Facility Operations Specialist”. That’s kind of a catch-all phrase meaning you’re someone who knows how large facilities operate, including wind tunnels, research labs or purely administrative office type buildings. Whether they are government owned or not, these type facilities all have certain things in common that are necessary for them to function smoothly for their designed purpose. For instance, they all have large HVAC systems and motor control centers (MCC) for the operation of pumps and motors to circulate water and steam through the building. I started doing this type work as a GS-13 many years ago (more than 15). Because of my experience in that field, in 2004 I was selected as the TAM for Operations (Technical Area Monitor) on the ROME (Research, Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering) contract at NASA/Langley’s Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. After five years in, I switched to being the TAM for maintenance and did that until 2012 when I joined NASA/Langley’s GIS Team. One further word about ROME; at that time, it was the largest (10 years-$1billion) contract of that type ever granted by NASA (I’m kind of proud of that). To summarize, I have over 25 years of experience in operations and maintenance in several of Langley’s major (and some not-so-major) wind tunnels, ranging from subsonic speeds to hypersonic, and everything in between. I have served as Facility Coordinator, Facility Safety Head, Environmental Coordinator and Safety Operator (someone qualified to perform lock-out/tag-out) for more than 30 years. I also did a short (4 years) stint as manager for 25 technician specialists in some of Langley’s key Structures, Materials and Thermal Laboratories (that was really fun)! Show less

The CAIB Report is one of most insightful reports on the inner workings of NASA I have ever read, particularly chapters 7 & 8. I encourage everyone to take the time to read this important document. The NASA Ombuds program was established specifically in response to a recognized need for an alternate channel of communication for any employee to raise work related issues without fear of retaliation from management. The Ombuds program is confidential, informal, neutral and independent. I served as a Langley Center Ombudsman for nearly 8 years and recently resigned from that collateral duty to provide others an opportunity to serve in this often very challenging but also very rewarding role. I fully endorse the program and encourage anyone experiencing any kind of work related issue, civil servant or contractor, to see an Ombudsman and begin working towards a resolution. I can tell you from experience, the program does work. Here are some important links:http://atlarc2.larc.nasa.gov/ombuds.htmlhttp://ombuds.hq.nasa.gov/index.htmlhttp://s3.amazonaws.com/akamai.netstorage/anon.nasa-global/CAIB/CAIB_lowres_full.pdf Show less

There's nothing more important than music. I got my first guitar in 1963 at age 14 and have been a musician ever since. I do a lot of private work (black tuxedos) with my quartet and can also often be found sitting in with other groups wherever I can. "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs every day. There's also a negative side."Find me on facebook for more info.
