This commission advises the Columbia City Council on matters pertaining to substance abuse. We were responsible for providing sound judgment regarding the efficacy and feasibility of programs and policies designed to prevent the harmful effects of alcohol and other controlled substances.

Columbia, Missouri

Jumpstart works to provide high quality instruction to at-risk preschoolers to promote growth in oral language, book and print knowledge, and phonological awareness. Our team implemented biweekly afterschool sessions that included various activities designed to target language and literacy skills. I was responsible for leading my team of five tutors in preparation for and implementation of sessions, completion of required service, and maintenance of personnel files, which required extensive communication and organization.

Columbia, Missouri

I, along with our other Co-Chair, was responsible for keeping our student members aware of relevant public health policy at all levels. We encouraged students to take part in the legislative process by contacting their representatives when important issues arose. We also organized meetings and events to allow for collabortation with other students, professionals, legislators, and members of the local community.

St. Charles, Mo

I was responsible for researching local health departments around Missouri to assess the populations they serve, services that are provided, funding sources, and staffing. My goal was to determine how St. Charles County can improve service provision to target specific issues and identify sources of funding that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. I also rotated through Immunizations, WIC, Environmental, and Vital Records to get a better understanding of how these departments operate on a daily basis. I then developed and issued a survey to the public to assess how completely their needs are being met and how the department can improve operational efficiency.
