Managing a team of IBM iSeries Developer, my responsibilities ranged from RPG development to OS400 support, with a heavy involvement with the bank MQ messaging infrastructure across a wide range of platforms. I lead an upgrade project migrating from our AS/400 to the new IBM iSeries ensuring that the latest e-Business technologies were evaluated and installed if they offered a tactical advantage to the Bank. This was a diverse role with new challenges on a day by day basis; working with systems including iSeries (AS400), xSeries Servers, Linux/Unix, Mainframe and Windows Servers.

My first experience of Freelance Consulting was mainly offering my services as a JBA Technical Consultant and this led me to contracts with companies such as American Express, British American Tobacco, Invensys, United Biscuits, Origin, Bullworker Europe, Parker Pen and IBM. I worked on AS400, Unix, VAX and S390 platforms. Projects as diverse as JBA modifications, Y2K coding, network restructures, data migration, financials, manufacturing, SOP and distribution systems, OS Installs and desktop support.

During my tenure at JBA I worked on most of the System/21* Applications focused on RPG development and system communications.* System21 was originally written by JBA, then bought out by GEAC in 1995(ish) who were bought by INFOR in the early 2000's

Programming on the System/38 and my first exposure to the IBM AS400 as the system was launched during my time at Tosh. I was lucky enough to be one of the first people in the UK to work on the "400". Software development was mainly in RPG3, RPG400 and CL on an inhouse distribution system.

Back in the grey dim and distant mists of time.. I started programming on this big new box called the IBM SYSTEM 38: a great creamy behemoth of a computer system with huge terminals that buzzed and clanked. I was mentored by a grey haired pony tailed programmer who mumbled a lot, swore frequently and wore sandals: In a bizarre twist of fate... twenty years later I find myself metamorphosing into that same programmer ;)
