Online DVD rental service founded by me and my brother James in January 2004.Core team comprised of my mentor and visionary Peter Beguely, little brother and all-round general Johnny MacAvoy, Mum and Chief Pasta Puttanesca Officer Antonia MacAvoy, and Dad and Chief Support Officer, Tim MacAvoy. And many other long term employees.Modelled after Netflix and their DVD delivery success, there was a clear opportunity for this model in New Zealand with the VideoEzy walk-in rental chain being the main incumbent movie rental operator in the country. We set out with Peter Beguely and the rest of the family to launch the first DVD rental-by-post service in New Zealand, ultimately to be sold to Sky TV in 2008.Technologically ahead of its time. Frontend, warehousing, operational software all developed in-house and in 2008 launched a machine-learning recommendations engine written in C, all of which carried through to the DVD Unlimited joint venture.
