Research Apprenticeship
CurrentAs a recipient of the generous Cambridge-Africa funding, as well as support from the GCRF, I have been able to understand better how genetic adaptation leads to improved survival in infection scenarios – especially those involving multiple microbial species. Under the antimicrobial stewardship program, I am actively involved in a project attempting to understand the diversity and transmission of Multidrug-resistant pathogens in Western Kenya. This Kakamega-Cambridge collaboration is currently being led by Dr. Anthony Sifuna (MMUST) and Prof. Martin Welch (University of Cambridge, UK), with support from Professor Oleg Reva (University of Pretoria, SA).
Project Lead, Dr. Okoth Patrick Kirsteen’S Project Group At Mmust, Department Of Biological Sciences
Alongside a faculty lecturer of Molecular Biology and Computational Biology/Bioinformatics, and two other colleagues in the program of Biotechnology, we worked on a PowerPoint presentation to a group of visiting German Professors and donors; urging them to donate a 3D printer to MMUST and making a case for the ‘Integration of the 3D Prototyping into the Pedagogy of Science and Technology Related Courses’ and for the exchange programs to expedite among other things:1. Bi-universities trainings on 3D Printing;2. Institutional Collaborations on the contemporary technologies between German universities and Kenyan universities. On 30th of March, I submitted an Essay paper to the faculty lecturer - as part of the extensive project in the In silico dry lab- urging for a new approach to the delivery of bioinformatics in MMUST. In that paper, I outlined the following key areas which should be considered:1. Web - based teaching of introductory bioinformatics, with course contents adapted from some of the simplest bioinformatics literatures, like Xiong (2006).2. Introduction of short courses and workshops/training programs in collaboration with multinational research institutions like H3Africa, IBR in Uganda, ICIPE in Kenya, and TReND, as was organized in University of Ghana by America Society of Cell Biology (2013).3. Outreach and exchange programs to bridge the knowledge gap between students and researchers from different institutions. Moreover, I emphasized the need for multidisciplinary collaboration between researchers in Mol. biology, Computer sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry & Biochemistry.Currently, we are developing a digital file/CAD file of a 3D model of a DNA molecule for 3D printing later in May 2018, to be used as part of the in-silico dry lab experiments as part of expediting the introduction of new approaches to teaching of molecular courses. The project is on progress, with an eye focused on an exchange program training on 3D Prototyping.
