Senior Software Engineer
In my 2.5 years at Brex I had the pleasure of working in or leading 6 teams, shipping at least 10 microservices as the lead or sole developer, and helping the company hit some impossible deadlines for big new products.Software is a team sport. Unless specifically mentioned, everything below was done in the company of many excellent engineers and managers. Some highlights:- Started the Internal Tools team from 0, taking responsibility for the infrastructure behind Brex's 600+ Retool apps. Hundreds of Brex employees worked all day in these tools (CX/Ops) and 100% of Brex customer support tickets were solved using them. Worked directly with the Retool team to improve their product to better suit our needs.- Completely overhauled the way Brex sends emails, creating a markdown and react based templating system and Retool-powered CMS. Got adoption from 20+ other teams to use it.- Led the onboarding/engagement team, responsible for getting customers through the compliance/KYC process and activated- Worked closely with the security team to design and implement role based access control for all internal tooling and APIs using JWTs. Got this auth framework adopted across the org.- Helped launch Brex Cash by spending a quarter working on a site-wide redesign and the move to a component library. - Was the lead maintainer for the highest traffic microservice at Brex for a while. It handled about a quarter of the company's RPC traffic.- Built some of the core financial infrastructure powering card authorizations in Brex Empower. Easily the most complex project I've ever worked on - and with only a 3 month deadline. Somehow we managed to deliver on time.
Director, Application Development - Search & Tools
Clique acquired Wantering in 2015, and we immediately jumped in to apply our expertise and tech to Clique's fast-growing media and commerce business. Some highlights:- Overhauled their shopping platform, moving from a monolithic PHP app to a distributed system written in Node.js, Python, and Go.- Implemented a distributed web crawling system to bring in near-real-time product data for our 5mm product catalog- Successfully launched an extremely ambitious iOS shopping app, with average reviews of 5 stars- Rearchitected the core publishing system as a static site generator, with 95% of pages served from S3 via Fastly- End to end automation of all infrastructure via CloudFormation, CircleCI, Docker/Amazon ECS, Fastly, and Lambda. Two commands from an empty AWS account to a full working website (assuming you have domains and a database snapshot)- CI/CD pipeline that handles 100+ test deployments per week- Built a number of high impact internal tools that have led to new product lines and measurable impacts in editor productivity.- Tuned and improved legacy CMS systems, improving performance by 1000+% in some cases.
Co-Founder
At Wantering I worked on dozens of products and internal tools supporting our fashion search engine. I was the principal engineer responsible for the web crawling infrastructure that kept our product data up to date, building the crawling infrastructure, deployment tools, and the quality control tools that allowed us to audit that data. I was part of the team that built our primary search API, written in Node.js, as well as the backend data pipeline that combined data from various social networks into a coherent data feed. The data platform was built in Python, making extensive use of Redis, Postgres, RabbitMQ, and a tightly tuned deployment of Solr. When we found problems with external data I implemented a variety of tools using machine learning and human verification that would identify problems, quarantine bad data, and fix the underlying issue. These systems processed hundreds of millions of data changes per day with extremely low latency.
