Since working as a sports correspondent whilst still at college (I was Trevor Brooking's producer aged 20!) freelance consultancy work has been an important part of my career, when my main contracts have allowed. I've written and made media for the BBC, the UN, the Guardian, Boneshaker magazine, Mr. and Mrs. Smith hotel guides, Bristol Life, and the Jordan Times.I’ve also worked extensively as a copywriter in the commercial and public sectors. As well as developing guidelines for style, voice, and tone, I’ve written tweets, slogans, promotional and instructional copy, social media and email newsletters on behalf of clients...I’ve also written annual reviews, project proposals, crafted campaigns around public health issues, and used audience insights to script viral video campaigns. I’m comfortable turning jargon and industry language into plain English and calls to action, and have worked on both commercial and behaviour change campaigns.I've worked as a trainer and learning consultant, creating and delivering online and face to face training.I’ve also got launch and strategy experience, including writing press releases, hosting press conferences and representing organisations. Media Training Station designs and delivers blended learning in journalism, media and communication skills, as well as offering management consultancies in these areas. We also produce broadcast and print media, and manage social media and online campaigns. MTS is a not-for-profit social enterprise (AKA 'Community Interest Company') working to expand professional training into countries and places where access to vocational skills training is limited or non-existent. We work in challenging environments and areas affected by conflict.We have successfully delivered campaigning media activities and bespoke training around the issue of gender-based violence affecting Syrian refugee populations in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan on behalf of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.On behalf of the multinational media development organisation Internews we created and delivered online training courses in Arabic and Persian for mid-career journalists.We are working in Nigeria with the British Council, the Department for International Development and Ahmado Bello University to develop a postgraduate diploma in conflict-sensive reporting.We run the media development and training aspects of the East Africa Cup, a sport-for-development event for young people from Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda.We produced the launch video for International Inspiration, one of the London 2012 legacy charities which aims to transform young people’s lives through sport.We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Media High Council of Rwanda to support development of the media there.

Africa Resilience Network (ARN) Editor: Mentoring and training [via Zoom/WhatsApp/email] a cohort of Kenyan and Nigerian journalists, editing their work for the ARN website and social media campaign, with a specific focus on disinformation around the Covid-19 pandemic; wrote a handbook on health disinformation as part of the project, and wrote and produced podcasts on health disinformation and human rights. Wrote handbook and training material for journalists and communicators on spotting and countering Kremlin-sponsored disinformation.

I volunteered every June at the East Africa Cup for more than a decade, coordinating media training and delivering sessions in journalism and media skills to young East African professionals and volunteers.The EAC mixes football with first aid classes, and is a training event for local coaches, community leaders and journalists. It's about cultural exchange and learning, not just winning matches – for most of the young people involved it's their first trip abroad, and young players attend workshops in topics like HIV and AIDS prevention, leadership skills and conflict resolutionAfter the games there is a cultural exchange programme which features dance, theatre and music from participating countries.If you are interested in supporting the EAC, please get in touch.
