About Nick Russill

After graduating from Cardiff University, I began my professional journey as an Exploration Geologist in the Australian outback, working on copper and gold projects. In 1992, I co-founded TerraDat Geophysics, which has grown to become one of Europe’s leading subsurface mapping companies servicing the engineering, environmental, and energy industries. Today, we have a dedicated team of over 20 geoscientists and offices in Scotland and Spain. My experience with challenging terrains led me to spearhead the development of rugged all-weather computers under Terralogic Ltd., serving a diverse client base until we sold the company in 2011.My passion for mountain and ocean-based sports, combined with my expertise in map-making, inspired me to co-found a series of the internet's top specialist weather websites in 1996. These platforms now serve over 65 million users annually. I am committed to using these websites to enhance people's appreciation of the outdoors and promote responsible travel, especially in the context of climate change. As a photography enthusiast, I was among the first to use kite-lofted photogrammetry to capture images of Antarctic islands. My expertise in 3D imagery has been applied to a range of projects, including Cadastral Mapping in Alaska, Forensics, and digital heritage documentation. In 1993, I was honoured as the 'Young Welsh Entrepreneur of the Year' and have since remained deeply committed to inspiring the next generation. I enjoy speaking at schools and representing the Welsh Government. As the Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence and Honorary Associate Professor of Engineering at Exeter University, I contributed significantly to the first MEng degree that incorporated gold-standard project-based learning and entrepreneurship. I continue to mentor students and staff startups, with a particular focus on sustainability. In 2019, I embraced the role of Trustee for a Welsh social mobility charity, working to help disadvantaged Welsh school children find pathways to STEM careers. My career is a testament to my scientific expertise, entrepreneurial drive, and my dedication to education and social empowerment.
