About Nick Shepherd

I'm just a software developer who wears many hats – one moment I'm a manager, another I'm a mentor. I try my best to juggle two careers, working on software and nurturing wonderful teams of dedicated tech professionals. I've had the privilege of working with Microsoft technologies, both on-premises and in the cloud (Azure, for those who are familiar). My goal is to continuously seek out ways to enhance the effectiveness of ALM and SDLC, be it through technology or the collective efforts of our fantastic team. Recently, I've had the opportunity to contribute to some significant projects in the aerospace, manufacturing, e-commerce, and NGO/IGO sectors. I find my groove in roles that allow me to hone my technical and soft skills, and I have a deep appreciation for the chance to guide junior technologists. During my free time, I like to indulge in simple pleasures like riding mountain bikes, enjoying video games, experimenting with music, and dabbling in the art of painting miniatures.

As the Director of Engineering at GenUI, I was responsible for leading the direction of the engineering teams. My role involved fostering a culture of high technical standards, unifying the designed platform, and taking technical ownership of the cloud platforms we utilized to create scalable, maintainable, and resilient cloud solutions. Part of my role was to act as an individual contributor working with clients to tackle thorny web application development problems leveraging the Azure cloud, .Net, C#, and the Power Platform. Additionally, I lead initiatives within my practice to further the use of CI/CD and TDD. Finally, I spent time on several projects in the biotech space architecting end-to-end data pipelines (ELT/ETL) with technologies such as SQL Server, Cosmo DB, PowerBI, and Azure Data Factory.
  • Mazars In Us
    Manager - Management Consulting
Mazars In Us Jan 2021 - Feb 2022
    New York, New York, Us
As a Development Manager at Mazars USA, I had a wide range of responsibilities. One of my primary duties was overseeing the development of intricate web-based software and fostering a culture of excellence and continuous learning within the team. I placed a strong emphasis on utilizing technologies that supported Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), Test-Driven Development (TDD), code review processes, and agile methodologies. Additionally, I provided leadership to a team of software developers, offering guidance and mentorship to junior members to promote their growth and development. One of my major achievements was leading the architecture, development, and management of the team responsible for delivering Datapath IFC. Datapath IFC was a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution powered by Azure Cognitive Services. This innovative offering enabled the processing of complex PDF forms, simplifying the application of intricate business rules and manual error correction. It was built on .Net 6 and Blazor Web Assembly, and Datapath IFC could be found on the Azure Marketplace (https://azuremarketplace.microsoft.com/en-us/marketplace/apps/mazarsusa1595009931776.datapathifc-saas?tab=overview).Furthermore, my team successfully developed and delivered "Facility Insights," a Blazor web application that allowed a prominent biotech company to effectively manage the construction and maintenance of its facilities. Similar to Datapath IFC, this project was also built using Blazor Web Assembly and hosted on Azure. In 2021, I led an initiative to implement the Power Platform Center of Excellence (CoE) starter kit and Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) for advanced makers in our internal Power Platform projects. This effort involved collaboration with the Microsoft team to gain access to the private preview, and we also assisted numerous other customers in setting up this technology within their own environments.
  • Dxc Technology
    Enterprise Architect, Manager, Application Development
    Dxc Technology Mar 2015 - Jan 2021
    Ashburn, Virginia, Us
In my capacity as a System Architect, I assume a leadership role where my primary responsibilities encompass guiding a team of passionate technologists to successfully execute Full Stack development projects across various industries. My role entails a balanced allocation of my time between architectural and development tasks, crafting processes and best practices for the team, and providing mentorship and guidance to fellow developers.Among the intriguing challenges I've encountered, one notable highlight was in 2017 when we launched an Associate Consultant program at DXC. In its inaugural year, we onboarded two recent college graduates. This 12-month program was thoughtfully structured to provide these developers with exposure to a wide array of contemporary development practices, thereby complementing traditional recruitment efforts. During my tenure at DXC, I also spearheaded the development of MVC Web applications, Ethereum blockchain smart contracts, an Azure-hosted digital asset management system, and a proprietary rendering engine based on DirectX.Another significant challenge involved introducing a modern Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) process model to the team. After careful consideration, we embraced a SCRUM workflow and incorporated Test-Driven Development (TDD) practices using tools like Nunit and MOQ. Additionally, we implemented a continuous delivery pipeline leveraging Git, Jenkins, AutoIt, and Selenium to enhance our development and deployment processes.
  • Superherostuff.Com
    Tech Lead
    Superherostuff.Com Nov 2009 - Feb 2015
As a senior software developer, I was responsible for architecting, developing, and deploying B2C and B2B E-commerce web applications. I coded and managed the development of a mission-critical line of business applications. My role also required me to manage in-house and contract developer resources. During my tenure at Emerchandise, superherostuff.com grew over 10 times, achieving revenue of over $12 million in 2014.I encountered several interesting challenges during my time there. My initial task for superherostuff.com involved migrating the legacy codebase into a contemporary dynamic web application architecture. This proved to be particularly challenging as it was crucial to maintain the site's SEO by servicing legacy URLs. The E-commerce platform also needed to support both desktop and mobile devices from a single maintainable codebase. Ultimately, we achieved this by heavily customizing an open-source E-commerce platform (nopCommerce). Additionally, I was assigned the task of migrating multiple disparate line of business desktop applications (CMS, ERP, and OMS) into a unified web application. This allowed the business team, customer service, and content team to manage superherostuff.com from a single portal. We used Kendo UI to create a WYSIWYG content editor for the management of navigation, content, and pages. The skills I utilized included ASP.NET, C#, JavaScript, jQuery, Kendo UI, HTML 5, CSS 3, T-SQL, MVC 5, Web Forms, Entity Framework, Windows Forms, SignalR, IOC (Inversion Of Control), AutoFac, AutoMapper, XML, and IIS.

This involved migrating to non-table-based HTML and updating the styling to reflect contemporary style guides for SQL Server. I was also responsible for updating the ASP.NET ReportViewer control for reporting services.I dealt with the localization of the control, enabling both LTR and RTL support. A significant portion of the project involved coding the ReportViewer control to ensure it supported both Quirks and Standards modes in a variety of web browsers.

This project utilized techniques such as personas, use cases, and task analysis to rescue a failing project. The system was implemented using ASP.NET and SQL Server. I also designed and developed the user interface of a reporting portal for a "company culture" survey. That project was implemented using SQL Server reporting and analysis services, as well as ASP.NET.I was tasked with conducting a usability evaluation of a client's pre-existing web application to provide benchmarks for future bespoke development work, leveraging the skills I had acquired at Colonies Networks.
  • Snowboard.Com

At snowboard.com I led the team that was tasked with improving the usability of Colonies.com. This involved conducting a series of usability evaluations and deriving guidelines from the results. The project served as a catalyst for a cultural shift within the company towards a more efficient, user-centric design and development approach. I designed and developed an ASP.NET customer feedback solution, which provided a crucial source for quantitative and qualitative data regarding the end-user experience. I also created reusable site features in C# as custom ASP.NET controls. Additionally, I developed a survey system, enabling members of the business team to directly ask questions to both internal and external customers. At snowboard.com I led a team in optimizing the scalability of the primary Colonies platform by refactoring session management, caching, and bandwidth usage.
