At Schepens, a multitude of research labs come together to push forward the vanguard of ophthalmology and optometry. These labs however, can fall short in their knowledge of computational programing with the intent to automate repetitive tasks and streamline research practices. My role is to conduct weekly classes, provide one-on-one tutoring and assist researchers covering a plethora of topics related to their respective research. These include data science and statistics, regression modeling, image analysis and much more.

University Of Rochester Insititute Of Optics

I have been assigned to multiple projects with the collective intention of creating a non-invasive corneal refractive correcting procedure. Additionally, I have been tasked with quantifying the phase change in Type-I Collagen derived from rat tails to determine the efficacy of the procedure on gel scaffolds, allowing us to determine the main component of corneal tissue responsible for the success of the refractive procedure. The preliminary data was presented at the annual Center for Visual Science Retreat.

Department Of Electrical, Computer, And Energy Engineering

In the lab of Dr. Carol Cogswell, I had been given the task of determining the feasibility of an extended depth of field while using dark field microscopy. I conduct hands on research on a variety of samples to determine the proper optical techniques to illuminate and image the membranes of living cells. By doing this, I hope to create an image where the point spread functions of individual live cells can be distinguished while creating a depth of field of about 50 μm (about 10x deeper than normal).

Mcdonnell Surgery Center

Shadowed retina specialist Dr. David d'Heurle as he conducted surgeries at Peidmont Hospital for a variety of issues that range from detached retinas to hernia of the retina. I also sat in during his private at Atlanta Retina/Clayton Eye Center practice as he treated patients for macular degeneration and scanned patients to identify retinal tears and holes. My objective was to get a better understanding of the challenges and obstacles ophthalmologists face today.

Physics Department

Direct and supervise two physics labs per week each with 20 students each with an emphasis on electricity, magnetism and optics. I begin by going over the entire lab through demonstrations and answer any initial questions any student may have. I then overlook the students as they complete the lab in the allotted period of time.
