Lead engineer/architect for eBay's search platform, built mostly from scratch in C++ and Java while also leveraging large scale open platforms such as Hadoop, HBase, etc. The team is relatively small for the breadth of work that we cover, and we are looking for more engineers to join the team. The query serving stack has two broad layers, a core general purpose search engine in C++ running on Linux and specific use case service stacks on top written in Java (e.g. listings of items for sale on eBay). Outside the query serving stack is data acquisition and index construction, which is mostly implemented in Java. With roughly one billion things for sale at any one time on eBay, along with high inventory churn, there is a large volume of updates that must propagate to the search experience quickly.My responsibilities include the technical road map for the search engine platform, helping evolve (or replace) other parts of eBay infrastructure, and helping the search engine teams and individuals grow their skills in building large scale complex systems and become more efficient in dealing with the whole product life cycle.

Responsible for architecture and technical strategy across a family of products, and direct involvement in design, implementation and deployment of these products. Technical achievements include first and subsequent releases of AltaVista’s Image, Audio and Video search services and web site. Project scope includes implementing new server technologies, new user interface design, and acquiring third party technology. Server platform is multi-processor and multi-computer using primarily Digital Unix Alpha systems, C++, and Java. Client environment is common web browsers across different desktop platforms.

Manager and lead designer of a six engineer team developing the database and communications engines for future desktop database and other groupware products. The engine is targeted for Macintosh and MS Windows computers, developed using C++ and can perform as both database client and server over mixed protocol networks including TCP/IP, AppleTalk and Novell protocols.

Sole responsibility to design and implement database engine for custom database server for an online information service. The database engine was designed to run on Sun, IBM PC, and Macintosh platforms. Completed access methods, concurrency control, deadlock detection, OLTP style crash recovery, and transaction error recovery. Revised multitasking kernel to use message based communications and message based IO scheduling. The server was operational and in use by customers. The database engine was also used in the IBM PC front end application which shipped, and the Macintosh front end which reached alpha release. Additional assignments included acting manager for QA, developed system administration tools and an interface to a third party accounting system.

Manager, Engineering Services (1987 – 1989)Responsible for development and acquisition of tools for logic simulation and PC board design. Development team included two engineers and one project manager. Managed configuration control department consisting of one supervisor and one clerk, and supervised one PCB design engineer. Key contributor in supporting design and debug of ELXSI 6460 CPU project. Specified, purchased and managed a network of Sun workstations for electronic CAD. Negotiated software license agreements. Personally developed Sun-based graphical interface to logic simulator running on ELXSI host system. Worked on a variety of new and existing programs for PC board design and maintenance.Manager, Software Development (1982 – 1987)Member, Technical Staff (1981 – 1982)Responsible for architecture, design and development of ELXSI’s high level file system (for EMBOS operating system) and a custom relational database system based on INGRES. Custom features included integration of relational database features (such as a one variable query processor) into the file system to support a high performance production database environment. The file system and database system were designed for a tightly coupled multi-CPU architecture and supported concurrent processing between the user application, the database system, and the operating system. Took project from concept phase through customer delivery and support phases. Responsible for negotiating OEM software contracts. Participated extensively with pre- and post-sales support. Participated in bring-up of ELXSI’s first prototype computers. Staff included six software engineers.
