The mission of Mount Tamalpais College is to provide an intellectually rigorous, inclusive Associate of Arts degree program and College Preparatory Program, free of charge, to people at San Quentin State Prison; to expand access to quality higher education for incarcerated people; and to foster the values of equity, civic engagement, independence of thought, and freedom of expression. Mount Tamalpais College promotes a student-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally-responsive model of teaching. My course specifically trains students to:-Learn an array of skills, strategies, and support systems to succeed in their college courseworkand facilitate lifelong learning;-Identify why they are going to college by defining their own educational goals and academicpathways for achieving those goals;-Reflect on their own educational experiences and to become empowered by their ownidentities as college students.-Participate as engaged members of MTC’s learning community in academic courses,extracurricular activities, and in the overall life of the college.I hope to grow support for the College's Public Speaking class and Ethics Bowl/Debate team.I also:-Design course syllabus, texts, and assignments for the Term-Teach Language Arts 99 & Develop course syllabi and course calendar in collaboration with the Academic Program Director-Assess student progress using formative and summative assessments, and provide regular feedback to students-Keep accurate course records, track attendance, and conference periodically with students-Maintain regular communication with co-instructors and MTC staff about the course and student progress-Attend meetings to plan the course, determine final grades, and other tasks as needed-Post class reports on course website

- Lecture, coordinate practice rounds/drills, and improve skills of advanced, traditional, and circuit/progressive debaters who amassed bids and received invitations to prestigious Round Robins, the National Tournament of Champions, and the National Debate Coaches Association National Championship- Expand opportunities for students to join in rigorous academic competition and become better, more engaged students in the classroom and articulate, informed leaders in their schools and communities

- Mentored and taught debaters who are unable to access high-cost institutes (such as low income and/or small school debaters), provided networking opportunities, and assisted them at no-cost to reach their competitive goals from national circuit invitationals to local novice tournaments

- Improve debaters' skills at tournaments that donate their funds to low-income speech and debate competitors, thus making the educational activities more accessible

- Taught four classes of 106 students in U.S. history and Writing/Reading Comprehension/Critical Thinking, with a focus on the multiple causes, key events, and complex consequences of major transformations in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries- Trained students in producing, presenting, writing, supporting, and debating claims with logical reasoning and relevant, accurate data and evidence that demonstrate an understanding of the topic or text, using credible sources- Created accessible lesson plans and emphasized innovative course design, classroom transparency, practical relevance, and intellectual formation

- Assisted students with mastery of historical and modern debates and speeches and the broad outlines of the history of scientific medicine; historical understanding of contemporary issues; and improvement in their powers of written expression by providing opportunities to articulate and defend positions via assignments

- Improved students’ oratorical skills through guided feedback on presentations and individual and group speaking events- Quantitative and qualitative feedback to graduate and undergraduate students on papers, debates, speeches, case studies, and case presentations concerning diverse businesses, business administration, and changing societal and economic trends

- Communications/media leader giving interviews to many state and national media outlets and delivering speeches that range from thousands of attendees at major events to smaller private gatherings- Organized debates and public speaking events to win a new contract ensuring victories for equal UC benefits regardless of citizenship, guaranteeing access to gender neutral wheelchair accessible bathrooms and lactation stations in every building, and more comprehensive healthcare, protecting the right to sex reassignment therapy for our students and workers, an historic first for a union- With the Anti-Oppression Committee, passed UC resolutions in support of Divestment Campaigns and assisted in organizing an Oakland forum with UCSC Professor Angela Davis and families of victims of police brutality in the Bay Area- Recruited new members and departmental stewards through strategic but deep organizing and trainings and other educational and outreach events - Protected the rights to healthcare, job security, and other workplace protections for the over 19,000 Academic Student Employees at the nine teaching campuses of the University of California through successful negotiation of a new contract- Engaged members in conversation about their concerns to identify areas for improvement and existing and new statewide campaign opportunities- Assisted in operation of the campus unit and in organizing Graduate Student Researchers and Research Assistants, through the creation and distribution of petitions, literature, workload surveys, and other organizing vehicles, including webpages

- Wrote with Professor Harry Scheiber for books concerning environmental law, public policy, international relations, judicial reform, offshore energy, and the history behind world/U.S. support and social movements for improving the state of oceans and the environment

- Recruited participants for public speaking events and yoga/mindfulness workshops building resilience skills and community- Provided support, resources, and mentoring for individuals (mostly students and young adults) surviving a traumatic brain injury and other mental and physical health conditions and researched current best practices for treatment and recovery- Advocated for the rights of patients in school, workplace, and community meetings

- Provided feedback and grades for Macroeconomics papers with a focus on economic and state policies, and papers centering around banking, investment management, insurance, and real estate industries - Assisted students in understanding basic marketing concepts and tools and their applications within the context of company goals, including budgets and program timelines- Assessed their abilities to apply these concepts and practice-making decisions through case analysis

- Led three, one-hour Masters Capstone Integration weekly sections to improve students’ public speaking/presentation skills- Advised students on social projects and practicum work, including research for the American Jobs Project, to influence U.S. federal and state renewable energy and labor policies, healthcare reforms, and environmental policies- Coordinated weekly one-on-one and small group meetings with students to strengthen students’ public speaking/writing

- Guided two courses of Interdisciplinary Studies Field students in their capstone experience and final thesis product of a sustained, original, and critical examination and public presentation of a central interdisciplinary research question- Administered weekly feedback, edits and prompts to improve student’s research skills, data compilation, analysis and drafts- Assisted students with monthly presentations about their research projects

- Evaluated and provided extensive feedback on four debates/papers/presentations for Innovation and Entrepreneurship which brings in a much wider range of perspectives (class, citizenship, gender, sexuality, and race and ethnicity) than is typically done by the business community and (re-) incorporates critical social analysis by placing innovation in its broader social, cultural, and cross-national context

- Lectured for three sections a week covering material for “Introduction to Psychology”- Facilitated and evaluated four presentations and exams and three papers addressing psychology in students’ everyday lives, behaviorism and habits, and the distinction between popular press versus peer reviewed papers

- Analyzed and evaluated 150 papers on psychological and social issues dealing with sexuality and gender- Coordinated three exams (two for the Disabled Students’ Program) and evaluated 55 papers on mindfulness and students’ personal assessment of, and ways to address, their stressors

- Challenged students to debate, present, and discuss different historical and geographic social and environmental justice issues from science studies and contemporary feminist theory for “Justice, Nature, and the Geography of Identity” - Employed diverse forms of media in sections and coordinated students' roles as weekly co-facilitators- Guest lectured on intersectional political movements, policy, violence, caste, race, and gender in the U.S. and India

- Facilitated biweekly debates and discussions with 70 students on modern political economy and sociology as well as contemporary political and economic social issues, specifically judicial politics, criminal justice, immigrants' rights, national security, and climate change for “Classical Theories of Political Economy”- Engaged 10 English as a Second Language students in individual tutoring and writing sessions that built on their unique interests and backgrounds

- Led two, three-hour weekly sections for Introduction to Managerial Accounting, creating weekly lesson plans, and aiding students in class presentations; debates; selecting, collecting, and analyzing data; devising metrics; and solving business and accounting problems - Organized student working groups and situated their lessons in the context of the rise of cloud technology, business intelligence platforms, and Big Data

- Provided analysis and literature with an emphasis on storytelling for a documentary aiming to amplify the work of advocates in the growing movement to end mass incarceration

- Led two, three-hour weekly discussion and debate sections for the Macroeconomic Analysis for Business Decisions course - Applied students’ lessons in intermediate macroeconomics to understand and interpret current and historical macroeconomic debates, speeches, and developments—including monetary and fiscal policy choices—and to make predictions about future macroeconomic events, primarily in the industrialized countries- Developed presentations and models with students that can be used to generate realistic predictions about the behavior of important macroeconomic variables such as output and income, employment and unemployment, interest rates, the government budget balance, exchange rates and the current account balance, and inflation

- Lectured and facilitated debates and presentations on “Social Movements, the Media, and the Internet” using readings and videos from advocates- Held office hours, and graded papers, exams, and weekly responses from 60 students for the School of Information/Media Studies/History/Cognitive Science course History of Information- Assisted students in analyzing data and research and how data has been shared and transformed over the past 40,000 years- Provided subject matter context in areas and topics such as policies and laws surrounding the media and information; the social implications of the internet; the cultural effects of technology; the rise of literacy; the organization of communication- Arranged speakers and class field trips

- Co-led annual retreat to develop leadership, public speaking, and education opportunities and practices for a variety of community organizations, including the Oakland-based youth-development Destiny Arts Center and Brothers on the Rise- Instructed undergraduate student leaders on how to contribute to the health of campus and community social justice organizations, develop the skills necessary to become transformative leaders, and increase their ability to engage in debate and reflection for Peace & Conflict Studies “Leadership, Dialogue, and Actualization”- Managed multiple groups and counseled a diverse range of projects, including programs around health education (specifically substance use and HIV risk behaviors) and prison education- Assisted students in applying for grants and funding to continue their work, as well as enhance public speaking skills to present their work to stakeholders

- Expanded facilitating, coaching, and networking (of volunteers and interns with community groups and vice versa) skills as well as organizational analysis of social movement strategy and tactics to fit qualitative research on Bay Area social justice coalitions- Created “Disability Accommodations 101” presentation and materials for Instructor orientations- Organized a conference and special events for community and student organizations to promote their work

- Budgeted, planned, funded, and managed national spoken word, debates, discussions, and other large public events, including noteworthy speakers like Martin Sheen and Representative Joseph P. Kennedy II- From 2007-2009, founded and managed the Northwestern University chapter through presentations and community meetings and recruited 25 members, from university faculty and staff to interested community members- Formed an executive board with community advisors, including building coalitions with local allies, such as the Muslim Student Association and American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee- Following 2009, continued to grow chapters in California for the international human rights organization and helped form the inaugural national campaign body, launching the first national conference which was attended by 40 chapters- Used my Spanish and Arabic skills to produce literature and build alliances with different community members- Successfully passed a resolution with the University of California, San Diego senate

- Coordinated, promoted, and facilitated debates and public speaking events for students and the broader campus/community- Counseled and supervised 130 students in social responsibility and healthy living- Trained in conflict mediation, problem solving, and the principles of nonviolence- Students chose to live in a residential college focusing on social justice issues and political and social engagement- Prepared agendas for and convened meetings on local volunteer opportunities and campaigns in the Chicago area - Educated residents on the Northwestern University Policy on Gender Identity and gender neutral housing options- Partnered with the Women’s Center to coordinate workshops on feminism and awareness-raising campaigns with residents, such as SAFE Space, Straight but Not Narrow, Getting Bi, and Social Justice trainings- Co-led and promoted LGBTQIA+ Campus Advisory Network meetings, which included the Gay & Lesbian University Union, LGBT Resource Center, Queer Pride Graduate Student Association, Rainbow Alliance, LGBT Alumni Association, and individuals across departments and organizations on all Northwestern campuses

- Guided students in debates and presentations on the diverse principles of social development research, such as perspectives on gender, race, sexuality, and class and development of consciousness for “Introduction to Human Development”- Compiled TA notes on grading, note-taking, and teaching best practices, and created forms for gaining student feedback

- Collected, analyzed, and entered survey response data from focus group sessions and interviews, with a focus on the criminal justice system- Used social scientist training and understanding of data to follow rigid protocols of questionnaires and surveys

- Co-led educational programs connecting underserved low-income and youth of color to nature through the arts, dance, and theatre of the oppressed exercises, showing them how to document their surroundings, and then forming groups for those students to brainstorm ideas for changing their environment- Trained staff in presentation software and website and video making technologies to present students' work - Expanded development of program at inaugural coordinator training camp in Tucson, Arizona

- Conducted ten meetings with emerging educators and activists to create and train in narrative practices and organizing tactics - Created and analyzed a study on citizen participation networks through a survey of 2,500 households, with the Department of Political Science at University of California, Berkeley- Organized a Democracy Index, a checklist for the outputs of India’s elections, through a survey of voting conditions for Bangalore citizens, with the Yale University Law School- Assisted in outreach for political movement collectives like the Alternative Law Forum and National Alliance of People's Movements and for mobilizations featuring the social economist Jean Drèze and advocates and authors Arundhati Roy and Vandana Shiva

- Researched funding and grant databases to locate, apply, and win grants centered on international education in the developing world- Recruited and directed three university volunteer interns to assist in our fundraising and grant writing work- Taught English/Social Sciences (emphasis on anti-racist and anti-sexist lessons) and created ties to local NGOs for students to do community projects and connect their classes to their lived experiences based on Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed

- Built on Professor Margulies’s research as lead counsel in Rahul v. Bush, which challenged the Bush administration's contention that Guantanamo inmates could not seek a review of their detention before Federal courts within the U.S- Assisted in the research for Margulies’s manuscript for his book, Like a Single Mind, on the changes in the US criminal justice system, such as the Patriot Act and increased anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia in racial profiling, following September 11, 2001- Surveyed literature on the history of U.S. scapegoating of immigrants and ethnic minorities and wrote abstracts and memos for Margulies and his two assistants, whom I recruited- Collected and organized library materials, with a focus on materials covering U.S. foreign policy and immigration policies

- The Fellowship brings together international groups for an interdisciplinary inquiry into minority rights, non-violence, and national histories of discrimination- Received “Best Research Project” for paper “Racism, Homophobia, and Xenophobia in the Netherlands: The Alliance between Far-Right Political Parties and the Working Class” - Presented research on interviews in villages surrounding Amsterdam at the Humanity in Action Senior Fellows Conference in Paris

- Awarded for research project “Iraqi Refugees, NGOs, and the Turkish Government in Istanbul,” conducted at Bogazici University in Istanbul to catalog and analyze NGO and government services available to refugees- Results disseminated broadly to university networks and aid organizations- Study broadened the participation of marginalized groups and was one of the first studies of Iraqi refugee networks

- Organized a conference and series of debates and public speaking events on Middle East-U.S. relations politics by contacting scholars through e-mail and Skype interviews- Maintained calendar for events and workshops- Documented work through photo, video, and audio recordings and posted to appropriate media and promotional channels- Ensured prompt and accurate distribution of payment receipts and invoices- Researched and cataloged Middle East civic society organization in the U.S. to improve networks for collaboration, as well as cataloging the tactics employed by these groups and networks- Prepared three discussion papers based off findings and analysis of Middle East civic society organizations

- Organized forensics, educational, and arts programs for native-Arabic low- and no-income students while conducting ethnography as community-based participatory research on community development in the banlieues ("outskirts")
