Klaus Schwab, the founder of the World Economic Forum, wrote "We must develop a comprehensive and globally shared view of how technology is affecting our lives and reshaping our economic, social, cultural, and human environments. There has never been a time of greater promise, or greater peril."I make it my mission to harness digital technologies to contribute to the building of knowledge-driven businesses and societies that have care of the whole human and the entire environment.I take pride in working with companies and students to co-create thoughtful and positive outcomes enabled by technology.

Programme Lead Industry 4.0 And Digital TransformationInnovative Manufacturing Crc (Imcrc) Jul 2017 - Jan 2018Carlton, Vic, AuCo-creator and product manager of the FutureMap Innovation Diagnostic. FutureMap is a guided assessment of a company's market positioning and its innovation-, strategy- and digital- maturity. This diagnostic tool is now in used by several organisations in Australia (Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre, Entrepreneurs' Programme) to assist in innovation and digital maturity conversations with manufacturing SMEs. -
Senior Research Scientist Data61 (Formerly Digital Productivity Flagship)Csiro'S Data61 Nov 2014 - Jan 2018Sydney, New South Wales, AuAs a senior research scientist in CSIRO’s Data61 business unit, I work to assist Australian (manufacturing) businesses to leverage modern information technology, the industrial internet and and Industry 4.0 technologies. The goal of this work is to make businesses more productive and to enable them to develop new business models, which are often services including a manufactured good. I do this through developing an understanding of how manufacturing companies think about the role of ICT in their businesses, through paper studies and deep industry consultations. The results of this work has been published as two discussion papers and extensively reported on by both tech news sites as well as mainstream national media such as the Guardian.Based on insights gained through this process and work from across CSIRO and engagements with external stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem, I develop value propositions which can address some of these pain points. One such example is the Industrial Internet Innovation Hub (i3 Hub), which, on the one hand seeks to raise the awareness, adoption and use of the industrial internet and Industry 4.0 in Australia and on the other also seeks to assist businesses wanting to use these technologies to develop new products and services for the world. -

Senior Research Scientist Manufacturing FlagshipCsiro Apr 2011 - Nov 2014Acton, Act, AuAs a Senior Research Scientist in the Manufacturing Flagship I incubated work investigating how modern Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and tools can be used to increase the productivity of Australian Manufacturers and how they allow manufacturers to develop new business models. Challenges and obstacles to the adoption of ICT tools were also investigated and the "i-Manufacturing” (“internet-enabled manufacturing”) concept was developed. This led to the publication of a discussion paper, which has been reported on by mainstream media such as the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) as well as the trade publications for both the manufacturing and IT sectors. The work has also allowed me to develop business development and product management skills.Prior to working in the manufacturing space, I investigated how the semantic web technologies and knowledge representation techniques can be used to increase the speed of new materials discovery and to develop the fledgling field of materials informatics. As such I started the International Conference and Summer School in Molecular and Materials Informatics, which was held in 2013 and 2014. I was also invited to serve as a visiting professor at Louisiana State University. -
Research AssociateUniversity Of Cambridge And European Bioinformatics Institute Nov 2009 - Mar 2011Cambridge, England, GbReliable structural knowledge about chemical entities and their properties is one of the building blocks of modern computational chemical, biological and medical research. Such knowledge is embodied in the CheEBI database and ontology. During my time as a research associate in the the Department of Genetics at Cambridge I worked as a visiting scientist at the European Bioinformatics Institute curating and further developing the ChEBI ontology. During this time, I also developed the Primary Immunodeficiency Disease Ontology (PIDO). Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases are very rare genetic diseases most often affecting newborns and toddlers and are notoriously hard to diagnose. The ontology represents knowledge about these diseases, which my collaborators and I have collected from the primary literature. We have demonstrated that the knowledge contained in the ontology enables the development of diagnostic tools, leading to a potentially much more rapid diagnosis of such diseases. -
Research AssociateUniversity Of Cambridge Apr 2006 - Sep 2009Cambridge, England, GbI coordinated a small group of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, working on the topic of polymer informatics. Polymers are complex mixtures of molecules and currently only substandard tools exist to describe polymers and information about polymers to computers. This slows down the in-silico design of new materials and therefore materials discovery.Work in the department resulted in the development of Polymer Markup Language, an extension to Chemical Markup Language, Lensfield, a precursor of the ChemPound data repository and ChemicalTagger, a text mining tool for chemistry. I also developed a first draft of the ChemAxiom ontologies for chemistry, which were in use at the Royal Society of Chemistry's ChemSpider product for a time.Apart from academic coordination, i managed to develop technology transfer experience as project outcomes had to be transferred to a corporate sponsor of this work. -
Project Leader Polymer InformaticsEindhoven University Of Technology And Dutch Polymer Institute Apr 2003 - Mar 2006Eindhoven, NlI investigated, how existing and often commercial information systems can be used in the context of an automated and high-throughout materials discovery laboratory to increase the speed of materials discovery. I developed an information management infrastructure for the lab and coordinated its implementation. -
Research ChemistCambridge Discovery Chemistry 1998 - 1999Cambridge, England, GbI worked as part of a team, seeking to automate the synthesis and screening of new materials and catalysts using robotics and high-throughout synthesis technologies. The research was carried out on behalf of commercial clients. The position allowed me to get a first insight into requirements for transferring research outcomes into a business setting. -
Research ChemistDsm Research 1996 - 1997Heerlen, Limburg, NlAt DSM Research I participated in discovery projects aiming to develop new olefin polymerisation catalysts for DSMs poly olefin business. The position provided me with first insights into research in a commercial setting and the drivers and considerations that govern it.
