My role centred on positioning Higher Ed Partners (HEP) as a leader in online learning by leading AS teams to support partner universities in global regions across South Africa, USA, Brazil, LatAm, UK, Spain, Portugal, Kenya, and Ghana. Part of my remit includes overseeing implementation of a differentiated customer experience, as well as directing the creation of resources and partnerships to enable partner faculties to create programmes and courses with SMART learning outcomes. Separately, I conduct research and case studies to evaluate learning outcomes and demonstrate effectiveness of HEP initiatives, and support institutions’ management of programme accreditation, validation and other region- or country-wide regulatory requirements governing online courses and programme delivery. An important component of my role is to align all aspects of Academic Services with other company departments, and I provide leadership, coaching and mentoring support to a geographically disparate global team. I also serve as a member of the Higher Ed Partners Governance Team to guide and support global expansion.

* The Role * In this capacity, I optimised the impact of AS by guiding partner universities in relation to implementation of programme and course strategy, resource allocation, faculty support and professional development. Accountability also lay with me to promote best practice in online learning and improve course quality, which I did by providing subject-matter expertise on online programmes in terms of curriculum, structure and accreditation, as well as designing and facilitating professional development workshops. On a day-to-day basis, I managed the operational activity of the HEPSA AS Instructional Designer Team, together with creating and updating resources and documentation to support programme directors, faculty, and instructional designers in the development or enhancement of online programmes.

* The Role * The focus of this role was to provide institution-wide leadership in learning and teaching innovation, and promote quality standards in blended learning. I did so by benchmarking national and international systems, tools and platforms, and pursuing funding opportunities to support research into education innovation, e-and m-learning, and media integration. It perhaps goes without saying that a key aspect of my role was to formulate and monitor compliance with an eLearning governance framework, and in a similar vein, I played a key role in the formation of Faculty strategy and plans. I also directed the management of organisational resources, which included overseeing operational activity of departments within the Centre for Learning Teaching and Development (CLTD), comprising Curriculum and Teaching, Evaluation Services, eLearning/Instructional design support, Student Success and the Writing Centre. Finally, I represented the University and CLTD at national and international conferences, symposia and other events.

Instructional Design (also called Instructional Systems Design (ISD)) is the practice of creating "instructional experiences which make the acquisition of knowledge and skill more efficient, effective, and appealing."[1] The process consists broadly of determining the current state and needs of the learner, defining the end goal of instruction, and creating some "intervention" to assist in the transition. Ideally the process is informed by pedagogically (process of teaching) and andragogically (adult learning) tested theories of learning and may take place in student-only, teacher-led or community-based settings. The outcome of this instruction may be directly observable and scientifically measured or completely hidden and assumed. There are many instructional design models but many are based on the ADDIE model with the five phases: 1) analysis, 2) design, 3) development, 4) implementation, and 5) evaluation. As a field, instructional design is historically and traditionally rooted in cognitive and behavioral psychology, though recently Constructivism (learning theory) has influenced thinking in the field.
