No sooner had I been awarded my PGCE from St Martin’s College (University of Cumbria, England) in 1998 than the French Foreign Ministry offered me the position of Director of one of the eight Alliances Françaises in Nigeria: part of my job consisted in training a cohort of Nigerian teachers, thus implementing British innovative ideas in Modern Foreign Languages teaching in a totally different setting. I could not possibly dream of a greater and personally challenging way to start my career as a teacher! After two extremely rewarding years training adults, visiting schools and teaching younger people, I decided to step back into the “real” world of comprehensive state schools in the United Kingdom. But the call of the unknown was stronger than ever before and I accepted another offer to lead a small French language centre in the south of Oman. The fortunes of life then led me to teaching primary school children in the beautiful Seychelles. Since 2006 I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching primary and secondary school students in two different British curriculum schools in Egypt and four IB World schools in the UAE and Uzbekistan. These exceptionally rich experiences have been critical in my decision to opt for a permanent international teaching career. Any people who know me can testify that I thrive on cultural diversity. Therefore, my overarching philosophy of education is to foster such core values as mutual respect and understanding in all my students. One of my favourite topics to teach in IBDP is Identities. I am always excited to remind my students of the fact that our identity is made up of all the people we come across, including all that we experience in our travels while living overseas. Our muti-faceted identity as well as our shared international mindedness are surely what we should all embrace and celebrate.Being originally from Reunion Island, a mountainous, volcanic island which has been classified World Natural Heritage by UNESCO for its exceptional biodiversity, I believe the students of any international schools would greatly benefit from a trip over there: not only would they develop their confidence in physical activity but also enhance their awareness of the importance of preserving their environment for future generations while reinforcing their French language skills.My son is eight years old and has been educated for the last six years in an international school environment. I want to continue to see him thrive in a school whose leaders inspire their students to become caring, active and knowledgeable global citizens.
