During my 6 months in the research laboratories of Alcatel-Lucent, i.e. Bell Labs, I have worked on an innovative cooling system for optic lasers. This system relies on the combined use of two-phase flow (high heat transfer coefficient) and microchannels (large exchange area). Moreover, the system, referred as thermosyphon, is completely passive since the flow is generated by the evaporation and the gravity, and is thus energy-free. My work consisted in an experimental characterization of this thermosyphon while proposing solutions to enhance the performances. The ultimate (and achieved) goal was to reach a difference of temperature between the electronics being cooled and the ambient air of 10K.
Phd Student
During my Ph.D. thesis, I worked on the modeling and the experimental evaluation of a new type of cooling system for servers/power electronics. This system, using an evaporating flow in a multi-microchannels evaporator, is a revolution compared to the current technology using cold air. This type of system, referred as two-phase on-chip cooling, allows a drastic reduction of the power consumption, an enhancement of the thermal performances and a reuse of the otherwise wasted heat. Thus, my work consisted in the development of a 1D model of an on-chip two-phase liquid pump cooling system for parallel micro-processors. An experimental test bench was then setup and used for the validation of the simulation code. Once validated, the latter was used to simulate a compact two-phase on-chip cooling system designed for a real datacenter blade server. Using the results obtained and an extrapolation, the thermo-economic integration of a large scale on-chip cooled datacenter with a district heating network using the datacenter waste heat was investigated.
