Peace Project Lead
Helping investors understand and manage conflict risks.“Peace finance” is an overarching concept bridging the world of finance with the world of peace building, it aims to give financial institutions the tools they need to understand and manage conflict-related risks and/or invest in projects and companies that contribute to peace and stability in fragile and high-risk settings.Conflict is a reality in a range of crucial sectors and geographies opening businesses and investors up to significant regulatory, financial (investment), legal and reputational risks, all of which can erode the value of a company or of an investment. Yet, many investors and companies lack awareness and understanding of these risks and have few tools available to manage and monitor them. By underestimating conflict risks, they are missing a crucial factor in ensuring long-term financial performance and preventing adverse impacts through their investments. Arguably, it is the largest and least well monitored and understood exogenous risk facing investors today.Building off SFG’s Peace Finance Hub, this project aims to create tools and research that can help investors understand and manage conflict risks. Specific deliverables include:1) Conflict Risk Exposure Research - to help estimate investors’ portfolio risk to conflict, to advocate for more data and transparency on conflict-related issues from companies and data providers.2) Peace Finance Heat Map - an interactive map with key questions investors should be asking around conflict sensitivity at each stage of the investment process.3) Conflict Sensitive Investment Policy - a resource for investors.4) Stakeholder engagement - active participation during specialised events such as the Geneva Peace Week and the Building Bridges Week.
