About Nicole Mcnulty
Freelance journalist with experience in print and audio, with a focus on long-form investigative reporting, writing and producing. Interested in politics, religion, extremism, education and crime. I was also nominated for a Hearst Award, and a project I worked on prompted an ACLU lawsuit against the FBI. IRE Member. I've written and done research for The New York Times, Deseret Magazine, NBC, CNN, Pushkin, Audiochuck, The West Side Rag and The Boulder Weekly.I pitched, investigated, reported and co-wrote Strangeland Season 3: The Killing Fields of LA, a 12-episode narrative podcast reconstructing and questioning a murder investigation and the subsequent convictions for Western Sound and Audiochuck. At Western Sound I also took stories from development to publication -- from writing treatments to translate books to podcasts, developing outlines, conducting and recording interviews, cutting tape, building episodes and immersive scenes in various DAWs, to writing and factchecking. With past experience in social media marketing, I grew the Alphabet Boys Instagram feed from 0 to 19,000 followers over the course of a few months. The revelations shown in Alphabet Boys -- that the FBI targeted and subverted racial justice activists in Colorado -- prompted the ACLU to file a lawsuit against the FBI. A skilled investigator and researcher, I successfully sued the City of LA and LAPD for records access and know how to identify, request and make sense of various public records. I'm a regular at courthouses and archives buildings, finding court transcripts and reconstructing criminal and civil trials. My youth took me from living in post-9/11 Germany as an Air Force brat, to hitting 80-foot jumps as a competitive snowboarder in Colorado, to living in a van and building concrete skateparks around the American West. I know how to talk to police, district attorneys, rebar salesmen, religious leaders and folks in between.
