I am Jonah and Flora's Mom. In 2019, both of my children were diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called ADSLD. This disorder presents as a combination of Cerebral Palsy, Autism, and Epilepsy. Both of my children are also visually impaired. ADSLD is a spectrum disorder; some children die within the first few months of life, some appear to have typical lifespans, but have developmental and intellectual disabilities, and most fall somewhere in between. When we received the diagnosis, there were fewer than 100 patients known, but with the increased availability of genetic testing, we have found many more affected and our numbers are now in the hundreds. I, like so many parent advocates for rare disease, have no prior experience in this field. I have taught myself to read medical journal articles, to speak at school board meetings, and to seek out opportunities to meet with developers in our city to advocate for universal design in new builds. I am collaborating with teachers and administrators to design a scalable inclusive education model with Jonah and Flora as vanguards. I participate in the school PTC as the voice of accessibility and inclusion. I am attending conferences and being mentored by those in my circle with non-profit experience. The mission for Rare Birds Foundation for ADSLD is simple, to find a cure for ADSLD while supporting affected families. Through these goals we seek to honor the memory of the children we have lost, to uplift those of us who are weary from years of caregiving, and inspire those who are newly diagnosed to take heart and feel 'rare together'.
