About Nicole O'Barton

👋🏻 Hi, I am Nicki (she/her) and I am a clinical social worker at the Center for Life Management in the Children's Department.🧠 My Aspirations•I want to drive social change and promote equity in the United States culture by advocating for change for my clients•I want to continue to learn about myself and grow through the use of the skills I have and skills I have yet to learn through my experience at UNH My preferred area of social work is clinical social work. I have experience in case management and signing clients up for state benefits such as Medicaid and Granite Advantage in the state of New Hampshire, however, my heart resides with clinical work. It is my passion to work with clients and their family system one on one and in a team approach as well. In the community mental health setting, clients are able to not only receive mental health services such as individual therapy but there are also groups and other services available as well. I have completed training on Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) and Child and Adolescents Needs and Strengths (CANS). The CALM training assisted in understanding suicidality and restricting means. The CANS training assisted in understanding the basic needs of the client and their strengths. My areas of specialization are anxiety and depression among teenagers, which both of these training touched upon.Racism and social injustice are still a part of everyday life in the United States. The American Dream has become flooded with issues of poverty, food insecurity, lack of health insurance, no mental health care, and more. It is simply not enough for myself or another social worker to claim that we are not racist. Social workers mustn't work with populations that are unaware of the basics because they can oftentimes do more harm than good. As agents of assistance, social workers need to do a scan of themselves and find any biases that they hold. We are not perfect people and we do not claim to be, but we can work towards building competence and acceptance through scanning our beliefs.
