I obtained my PhD in 2001 in marine microbial ecology after which I undertook postdoctoral research at the University of Canterbury / Gateway Antarctica investigating the utility of microbial symbionts as biomarkers for environmental stress in the Antarctic marine ecosystem and explored the role of microorganisms as inducers for settlement and metamorphosis of coral reef invertebrates. From 2005-2021 I worked as senior principal research scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science and in 2017 I took on a joint position as Professor at University of Queensland where, across both positions I undertook research into how microorganisms contribute to reef ecosystem health. In 2021 I became Chief Scientist for the Australian Antarctic Division, working across the Australian Antarctic science sector to set a decadal strategy for Antarctic science and liaising with counterparts in other National Antarctic Programs to promote collaborative interdisciplinary Antarctic science campaigns.In 2024 I commenced as Executive Director of the Institute of Marine and Antarctic studies where I lead teaching and research programs in Fisheries & Aquaculture, Ecology & Biodiversity and Oceans & Cryosphere.
