Hearing Support Teaching Assistant

Wandsworth Council

London, England

My role was as a teaching assistant for a hearing impaired unit based in a mainstream primary school. I primarily supported children from nursery to year 1 but assisted wherever needed throughout the school. The children I supported had cochlear implants and hearing aids and used personal FM systems and I am trained in the everyday maintenance and use of these. I used a combination of sign language and verbal communication with the children and as some of them are very new to hearing it was important that I was sensitive to their needs and could act as an advocate for them. As well as working alongside the class teacher and teacher of the deaf I liaised with other professionals who work with the children such as speech and language and occupational therapists. I also wrote observations and contributed towards the children’s reports and profiles. Outside of school hours I was responsible for producing resources, filing documents, organising the classroom and designing displays. In this position I received training through The Ear Foundation to better work with children who are new to hearing, specialist hearing impaired TA and deaf awareness training and also had the opportunity to attend presentations by esteemed professionals in the field of deaf education.
