My life has been simple to say the least. I have simple dreams, simple hopes, and a simple imagination. I simply dream of a world without the word “addiction.” I dream of a place where no child goes to bed hungry because one last hit was more important than food. I dream of a place where their innocent minds at the age of six do not ask me why mommy sticks a needle in her arm. I was a girl brought up in a simple town where I pretended to be oblivious to the fact that I had addicts in my family, my peer group, and my close friends. I was a simple girl with an ordinary life and an ordinary dream. You do not have to be an addict to want this dream, I can testify to that. No, I do not love this field because it was once me. I love this field because addiction is something no one should ever have to face. I love this field because addiction seems to be an almost incurable disease that the person deals with every second of every hour of every day. Addiction never leaves you, even when everyone else might. Addiction, that terribly disgusting word, takes all of those beautiful choices away from young minds, because that is your only choice from then on. My simple dream is to help addicts. It is to view them as people with beating hearts, and longing eyes, and lost love. It is to tell them that they are worth so much more than that syringe or that pill. It is to counsel them and console them. They are a real, less than simple person. After graduation I would love to pursue a career as a prevention educator. I plan on going continuing school and becoming a licensed counselor. I have a lot to learn, even more to figure out, but I know one thing- this is who I am. I am simple with small dreams. I just want that terribly disgusting word to go away. I just want no child to realize a drug has taken their place. I just do not want another child injured in a meth house explosion. I just want simple.
