I led the One Planet Living initiative, offering resources and support around the world for partners serious about sustainability.

I am based at our Oxfordshire regional office and continue to lead a programme of activities across Oxfordshire and around the Bicester Eco Town.

Working on one of the most exciting sustainable communities in the UK. Bicester Eco Town is a 6,000 home community granted Eco Town status under the last Labour government and setting themselves strong eco-aspirations. Beddington Zero Energy Development (BedZED) is a 100 home mixed-use development in South London, completed in 2002. It was designed to be a zero carbon development and aims to make sustainable living easy, attractive and affordable. It was designed to be a zero carbon development and aims to make sustainable living easy, attractive and affordable. BedZED has become a show piece for professional discussion on the challenge of sustainable communities.When I joined Bioregional in 1997, BedZED was a conceptual idea. Over the five years that followed, I was responsible for working with our project partners to bring the project into reality. We were lucky to secure the Peabody Trust as developer partners. We then secured the BedZED site, bidding competitively against mainstream developers. We set a legal precedent in land disposal when BedZED was the first local authority land sale to quantify the carbon emissions from competing schemes, place a financial value on the carbon savings and consider that value in best value considerations.At Bioregional, we worked as an integral part of the project team, advising on all aspects of the scheme including sustainable construction, material procurement, sustainable lifestyles, green transport plan, on-site energy generation, green facilities management and home marketing. Once construction was complete, we were responsible for delivering a green lifestyles welcome programme as residents and businesses moved in.I bought a flat at BedZED and have lived there since 2002.
