Explored an exotic and our local biome, invasive species, ecosystems services, and human impacts on the environment to determine if conservation practices are important for our ecosystems. Applied topics discussed to the American chestnut tree population decline due to chestnut blight using folktales to encourage students to generate their own hypothesis and understanding of the population decline. Allowed students to conduct individual research to investigate the Chestnut blight to create their folktales incorporating their personal understandings of the topics learned. Interpreting passive and active acoustics from sonar frequencies to monitor marine mammals allowed for me to acquire analytical skills through the execution of large scaled research projects. I counted the number and duration of whale calls located in different oceans. This was used in current research to measure density and to measure the direction the whale is positioned from the hydrophone. My work directly contributed to the lab efforts to develop new density estimation algorithms from passive acoustic datasets necessary to better inform management and improve mitigation efforts of ocean users.-Proficient in softwares such as Excel, Triton, Echoview, and Matlab-Contributed to long-term research that aims to make better use of the ocean and to protect marine life

Studied social-ecological interactions in an immersive systems based research program. Engaged with scientists, educators, and local communities to better understand how natural resources contribute to the culture, and how limitations of these resources impact their livelihoods. Collaborated with group members to analyze South Africa’s management approach to conserving their resources, wildlife, and natural lands. Our findings were incorporated into proposal and decision making report writings. This program used The Natural Step Framework to enhance sustainability learning during the course of the program. Parks and People allowed for students to participate in hands- on learning experiences that incorporated their own background of expertise to create a more diverse program. -Contributed to on going biodiversity research within Tsolwana Nature Reserve by helping trained scientists with sample collections, observations, and specimen identification-Engaged in sustainability learning by connecting different audiences to the scales within local and global systems and understanding that they are all interconnected

This program consisted of a class that looked at earth’s limited resources and the global impacts humans have on depleting those resources using The Natural Step framework. These concepts were then applied to technical writing using rhetoric. Spent 2 weeks in Ocho Rios, Jamaica and participated in hands- on sustainability learning using a local hotel and an organic farm as contrasting living arrangements. Practiced sustainable farming methods such as vermiculture composting, rain water collection, and stratified crop beds to prevent soil erosion.-Spent time living on an organic farm where resources were limited and learned practices that help conserve present resources-Conducted research on natural systems using The Natural Step Framework and presented findings to colleagues and faculty at Penn State
