Role listed
Founder And Principal
Founded support and networking group for former and current academics seeking careers outside of the academy.
Graduate Student Instructor
I taught recitations for Professor Julian Adams in his "Genetics and Society" course which covered current and controversial topics in genetics, including patenting, GMOs, forensics, gene transfer, cloning, sex selection, and personal genomics amongst others. I also gave guest lectures for the entire class and graded exams. I also taught recitations for Dr. Trisha Wittkopp in the "Introduction to Genetics" course. The course was required for biology majors. We covered a variety of technical topics in genetics.
Coordinator Interdisciplinary Group Seminar
I founded a lecture and social series through funding from Rackham Graduate School that was aimed at fostering collaboration amongst those working in quantitative genetics. The series continues to this day.
Graduate Student Researcher
In my dissertation I investigated the continuum of genetic relatedness by developing novel statistical methods for determining genetic relatedness between individuals. I also produced a computationally efficient method for the simulation of genotypes reflecting the shared ancestry of humans. I had the opportunity to present my research at numerous meetings and on-campus seminars.I was a recipient of the James V. Neel Graduate Fellowship and Genome Sciences Fellowship
Genetic Statistical Analyst
During my time at the Center for Craniofacial Genetics, I designed, implemented, and published several new studies finding an association between an increased number of certain physical traits and cleft lip and palate. I was particularly interested in minor physical trait anomalies that could help to refine the phenotype of cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL +-P) in multiply affected families.I planned the logistics and protocols for an international CL+- P study in Guatemala and then carried out the pilot data collection including surveys, tests, and genetic data in the field.
Graduate Student Assistant
I developed and carried out a plan for recruitment of difficult to find individuals in a diabetes registry. I was able to increase recruitment over 10%. I also planned and managed the data analysis for candidate gene variant study as part of a World Health Organization epidemiology study for type I diabetes encompassing over 100 centers and 5,000 people.
